GdS: Renewals, stadium and a stalled market – the knots that RedBird must untie

By Oliver Fisher -

AC Milan have only just passed into the hands of RedBird Capital but they already face a big list of tasks at the beginning of their tenure.

La Gazzetta dello Sport reveals that a bit of ‘haze’ has fallen upon Casa Milan and the renewal of the directors Paolo Maldini and Ricky Massara must be signed as a first port of call. RedBird’s top priority is to enable Maldini and Massara to work with clarity well-defined field of action.

While respecting the roles, Maldini has always asked for a certain freedom of action and also investment in order to strengthen the squad. These are the issues on the negotiating table above all, rather than the economic implications. In any case, he should sign.

After that, the mercato must take centre stage. Maldini and Massara have been working for months on various transfer operations, above all those for Sven Botman and Renato Sanches. The stalling has allowed other clubs to enter the race and Lille are not doing well in financial terms so they want to sell to the highest bidder.

Another knot is Leao’s renewal, which is taking a while because the agent Jorge Mendes asks for over €6m net per season plus bonuses for his client, while Milan have offered €4.5m. Since he is one of the most important players in the squad, it must be closed as soon as possible.

Finally, there is the stadium project, and Milan and Inter are perplexed about the timing of the new San Siro idea and therefore are looking around. The former Falck steelworks site in Sesto San Giovanni entices Milan but we must wait for the ballot for the election of the mayor, scheduled for Sunday 26 June.

  1. I don’t mind only 50m transfer budget for this season if Cardinale can bring 70-80k stadium only for Milan. Leave inter behind!
