GdS: Stadium debacle continues as Milan mayor asks Prime Minister for clarification

By Isak Möller -

The stadium debate has reached a new level of ‘Italianism’, as the politicians are now asking each other who actually has the power to make decisions. In fact, Milan Mayor Beppe Sala has sent a letter to Giorgia Meloni.

Meloni was recently elected the Prime Minister of Italy and it’s been a few busy weeks since. Given the confusion surrounding Milan and Inter’s stadium project, she has now also been dragged into that discussion.

According to Gazzetta Dello Sport, publishing the letter in full, Sala has sent a letter to Meloni asking for clarification on who makes the calls. It comes after the Undersecretary for Culture, Vittorio Sgarbi, stated that a San Siro demolition will not be granted as it’s a landmark.

“Prime Minister, I am addressing you directly, trusting in the construction of institutional relationships based on loyalty and clarity, to receive kind clarifications on the powers that have been assigned to the Undersecretary for Culture, Vittorio Sgarbi. Undersecretary Sgarbi, a few hours after his appointment, publicly formulated statements that I believe have no legal basis. I am referring in particular to two themes.

“The second has to do with the anticipated initiatives regarding possible constraints to be imposed on the Meazza Stadium. Speaking of the Meazza, Sgarbi, in opposition to the possible demolition of the current stadium, would have verbatim stated: ‘If a restriction is needed, I will grant it’. These are statements that, first and foremost, do not take into account completed and highly appreciated itineraries and complex administrative procedures that have already involved several institutions.

“But above all, these statements appear to go beyond the powers of the Undersecretary and seem rather destined to fuel confusion and disorientation that certainly harm the proper exercise of public powers in the interest of the community.”

The whole situation is rather bizarre, as Sala has highlighted before, given that one decision is constantly overturned by another. And the politicians seemed inclined to shoot decisions down but are not so quick to make them, making things very difficult for a country to develop.
