GdS: Milan’s summer mercato proven crucial – from Musah to Pulisic

By Isak Möller -

AC Milan made several significant changes to their squad in the summer and seven rounds into the season, they are starting to reap the rewards of that. In fact, the new signings have been very successful so far.

As highlighted by today’s edition of Gazzetta Dello Sport (see photo below), Milan have made good use of their new arrivals so far. Christian Pulisic started with a bang and got back on the scoresheet yesterday, scoring the opener against Lazio.

The American now has three crucial goals to his name, first scoring against Bologna and then against Torino. Milan spent just €20m to get him from Chelsea and he’s yet to reach his best, clearly with some things to perfect still.

Tijjani Reijnders has already played 585 minutes in the league and is the most-used player by Stefano Pioli so far. Yesterday, he got the MOTM award from the newspaper after another energetic performance from start to finish.

Yunus Musah also played in midfield last night due to the injury of Ruben Loftus-Cheek; another signing who has done well but was forced to leave after 29 minutes with an injury. The 20-year-old did really well off the bench and Milan are now starting to see his potential, able to play in many different positions.

Up front, Noah Okafor bagged his second goal of the season (scoring for the second game in a row) and provided further guarantees in the No.9 role, already equaling Divock Origi’s tally of last season. He has made it clear that he can play there, as well as on the wing, and that’s very important.

Finally, it must also be mentioned that Samuel Chukwueze has raised the level on the right flank – compared to Junior Messias – just like Marco Sportiello in goal compared to Ciprian Tatarusanu. Pioli now has options he can rely on, and that is crucial.

  1. We’ll see those players against Juventus, Napoli and Inter, PSG and Dortmund. They are coming good against teams that don’t and can’t punish mistakes…you keep babbling about someone proving themselves and they have 3 ok games each, and 3 bad ones, and the good ones came against low quality opponents…wow!

    1. It looks like you aren’t happy with the results. And always find things to rant about, if we beat those opponents, then you will find a different excuse!

Are you forgetting that last season how many points we dropped against mid table teams? Atleast this season, they are able to break low block defense, don’t try to be an online pundit!

      1. You are so on point. Breaking low block defense which was as difficult as hell last season is getting easier this season. Thanks to the new signings and the change in tactics.

      2. I am saying exactly what I have been saying for 4 months now, exactly the ssme. I still think that those players can’t compete with top players. Against Inter it showed. If you don’t like what I write you are free not to read and you definitely shouldn’t feel invited to comment on it. Pretty simple…

        1. Same Inter also dropped points against Sassuolo. So what’s your point? Are Sassuolo a top club, do they have better players than us? 4 months, i am one of regular reader of this blog, didn’t see you 4 months ago or you have changed your name?

          1. @Doki I don’t think so, cause he was optimistic about Milan. The other person, seems to be a doom and gloom squad member!

          2. He did fight with almost all regulars here but yeah you are right, but this guy emerged at the same time Gianlarlo disappeared. Guess I didn’t think much coz Giancarlo praised everyone apart from Krunic and Pioli.

        2. This is an open platform, likewise i am free to express my opinion as well. If i don’t like, your opinion, i have full right to express my dissatisfaction.

          1. You do, I don’t have a problem as long as you don’t try to tell me what I should or should not do, like you tried. I don’t care what you think about that, ok? If you refrain from that I doubt I’ll have issues with anything you write. In any other case, you know exactly what to expect…

Anyhow, Inter is a team I don’t follow, but anyone can lose any game. Have a bad day. What I think is that these mid (average) midfielders will have a bad day every time they face a strong opponent.

P.S. Maybe it was 3 months, who is counting when did they first comment?

          2. I only told you to not criticise when not needed. You are calling these mid average midfielders, based on what parameter? With the midfield, of last season we were dropping points against midtable opponents like Spezia, Cremonese. Atleast this season, we are being able to unlock low block defense, but that’s apparently not enough for you? Do you want them, to win treble, to prove their mettle?

          3. Well I do not care what you think I should or shouldn’t do. I’ll critisize whoever I want, and praise whoever I want. I am calling them that based on what I saw from them. Barely beating Verona, giving Bologna a bunch of clear chances, having Florenzi save the goal against Lazio (and points) etc. If you watched the matches I don’t know how can you not agree but ok. Your thing.

What I want? Top players at Milan, not a pick from players on discount. That was the strategy.

          4. And I told you I don’t care what you want. I do what I want, not what you think I should do. Is that clear? I don’t give a single F about your opinion on what I should do. If you are wondering based on which parameter, it is quite simple. Milan allowed almost all of the opponents a bunch of chances. Against Verona 3 points were hanging, against Bologna they didn’t use any of the chances, there were a bunch, against Lazio Florenzi saved points with that block. Basically most wins were not really clear, some were even lucky a bit. What good is that? Do you even watch the game or just results? Because from what I saw, Milan is playing the most boring football ever, against Verona it was so horrible to watch. Against Lazio, what happened? Leao. If Leao wasn’t in the game, they wouldn’t score for 20 games. Which part is that great? You mean Leao bringing the goals and assists again? That was there 2 years ago, nothing new. What is great?

I want top players at Milan, not the pick of discounted bunch. They took the list of players with expiring contracts or wanting to leave and that is how they find the players. First it was free transfers. We’ll see them play against top teams, not Cagliari and Verona, which they can barely beat…

          5. What are you baffling about? Against Bologna, we were leading 2-0 up after half time, this Bologna held Napoli and Juventus to a draw! Against Cagliari, we won comfortably despite conceding. We are playing competitive match, not exhibition matches and three points is all that matters. I don’t care, how do they get it.

          6. You want top players at Milan right? So it looks like, you are desperately trying to blame these players, just because you apparently don’t perceive them world class! Do you realise that? We have won, 6/7 matches, and are at the top two? No that’s not enough? PSG with world class, players couldn’t even reach Quarter Finals of the Champions League. I want Milan to win trophies, regardless of players at their disposal, it looks like you want us to sign world class players just to brag on social media even if we don’t win anything.

          7. I couldn’t care less whether, if you give a f about my opinion or not. By your comment, it’s clear that instead of genuinely criticising, you are trying to find flaws. Especially when we are winning, and not at the bottom half of the table!

        3. Inter Milan team have been together for years. They only change like two players per transfer window. When our team stayed together till next season, you will see the difference when we play against inter Milan.

    2. I see your point but looking at the big picture, it’s very likely to win the Scudetto if we win all the other games (like we do so far) and lose all games against these 3 teams (which highly unlikely).
Winning the “easy” games is crucial, that’s how you win championships.
I agree with you on avoiding the overenthusiasm (we see this a lot the past months) but we have good reasons to be positive – I would even say very positive with certain players.

      1. Possible but even against Bologna for example, they had allowed so many chances for them. I’m pretty sure that most players you are enthusiastic with I am not. But Musah looks great and Pulisic and Okafor if they stay fit…others…

        1. TKoje you’re not making a point by trying to make a point. So far I’m pleased with the squad compare to last season around this stage. Manchester city just lost 2 games against team that they should have win easily but does that make them a bad team?
The notion of buying ready talent is from the past not even Chelsea and Madrid doing it anymore. It’s not sustainable financially. Also Bologna was the first game of the season there will be struggle to get a formation or ideology set in right away. You can take your negative attitude else. We don’t need to read it here. Be mad idc, you’re not making sense as if opposition not going to get chances it part of the game. It’s not FIFA BRO

  2. Yes indeed.
    – Sportiello’s perform almost like a starter. He might compete with Maignan’s record if given more game-time, with these saves this season.

    – Chukwueze offer different type of winger than Pulisic : very strong in 1v1, with his agility & balance combined by his techniques.

    – Musah : He is like better version of Frank Kessie. Very strong, faster, aggresive, good dribbles, good movements & very versatile. He will be our important player in the future. Be careful, Loftus-Cheeks & Reijnders. Musah can take your starting position very soon.

    – Adli : Look pretty good with his long-passes, even compared to Krunic. But he need improvement at defensive aspects. If he can use his physical advantage (1,86 m) for defensive-phase, Adli can surpass Krunic. But still a little bit long way to overcome Bennacer.

    – Okafor : He might deserved the STC starting-line up now. Giroud finally found his peer to compete.

    1. Spot on. The only ones left to make an impact are Pollegrino and Romero, who are young and will take some time to adjust. You are 100% true about Musah, he could become the next Ngolo Kante for us. I don’t like comparing 2 players, but he has really impressed so fan and I would love to see him develop into a world-class player, remember he is just 20.

  3. New players look good. Now this team needs time to gain best momentum and play, with also 1 new very good arrival per year for upgrading. In that way Milan will have best possible position for Serie A domination what is crucial part for Europe results as well.

    1. Agreed with you, i think next summer or the one after that we will only signing 2 or 3 every season just to upgrading, since we almost have completed squad to start with, thing that we dont have last season

  4. It was a much needed good mercato.
As sad as I was seeing Tonali leave, it seems to have been the right move.
I loved that guy and his heart for Milan, but I say we sold him way overpriced and got very good players instead.
    The middlefield seems more dynamic.
I am especially happy to have seen Brahim leave, although I liked him and I his attitude but he was never what we promised us him to be.
At Real Madrid he, of course, is not a starter and can’t see that happening anytime soon.
As for the right wing: it was so insufficient and frustrating last season, that it’s a pure joy seeing the new right wing scoring goals and making assists.

  5. It continues to amaze me how well this team’s chemistry has developed with all these new signings. That’s quite different than Chelsea that has brought in new players but cannot form a team.

    1. I think the difference is that Chelsea doesn’t have a strong core of players that have been there before all those signings.
The last two transfer windows have been similar to Milans from 2017, with of course a lot of more money but still scheme less.

    2. They also brought in Pochettino who managed to lose the title with PSG. I mean that is an achievement that should bar you from landing any top jobs in the future but he got it. He will be out by November.

  6. “Samuel Chukwueze has raised the level on the right flank – compared to Junior Messias ”
Let’s not do that to Messias, he’s always played well and has stats to prove it. Maybe compared to Salad sure.
Overall let’s put it this way. Management banked on the summer transfers to have a good season which is a risk in and of itself. Last year we didn’t need to bank on the transfers. This year we have to. Jury is still out btw, long season to go still
