GdS: The options Pioli is considering to cover for Theo’s absence vs. Empoli

By Oliver Fisher -

There continues to be plenty of debate surrounding what AC Milan head coach Stefano Pioli should do in the absence of Theo Hernandez.

La Gazzetta dello Sport writes how Milan in the past were able to call upon Serginho in times of need given he could play both full-back roles, but in the absence of Theo Hernandez it could be up to Sergino Dest to play on the left side.

At the moment, however, Dest is less likely to start in place of the Frenchman compared to Fode Ballo-Touré. The Senegal international has barely played in 2022 for the Rossoneri, but being the only real natural deputy to Theo means he could well get the nod in Empoli. His future is uncertain though, with Galatasaray thinking about a January move.

Dest is a valid plan B. The American international has to leave behind the nightmare 45 minutes he had against Napoli in which he gave away a penalty but it most be noted that they are a stronger opponent than Empoli. Pioli has confidence in his qualities, even though he knows it will take some time for the 21-year-old to fully adapt.

A different solution would be to re-route captain Davide Calabria to the role of left-back and if he did switch flanks, Dest would be able to perform in his natural position on the right.

Theo Hernandez’s condition meanwhile will be re-evaluated and a more precise update on recovery times will come from that. He has the games against Juventus and Chelsea (home, not away) in mind.
