GdS: Where Theo Hernandez ranks among the best left-backs in the world

By Oliver Fisher -

Theo Hernandez is considered one of the best in the world in his position, but where exactly does he rank among the top left-backs at the moment?

Theo Hernandez has been nothing short of a revelation since he arrived from Real Madrid in the summer of 2019, taking the starting spot from Ricardo Rodriguez and very much bringing a breath of fresh air to the squad in terms of his attacking play and his constantly developing defensive game.

Who is the best performing left-back in the world right now? There are certainly some fair calls for Gaya, Nuno Mendes, Ben Chilwell or Raphael Guerreiro just to name a few, but the feeling is that Theo is in the company of Joao Cancelo (Manchester City), Alphonso Davies (Bayern Munich), Andrew Robertson (Liverpool) and Ferland Mendy (Real Madrid).

Looking at the stats so far in 2022-23 (all comps), Theo Hernandez has played in nine games, with 1.67 key passes per 90 minutes (the second most out of the players mentioned above). He makes 1 dribbling attempt per game (the fourth-highest), and 0.44 accurate crosses which ranks third on the list.

In terms of duels he is involved in 1.89 per 90 minutes which is behind only Davies and Cancelo. In balls intercepted he is at 0.78 which is fourth in the ranking, and in recoveries he is bottom with 0.44.

  1. Crazy how much the game has changed. All the “best” are basically average to poor defenders and excellent attackers. Modern game for sure
