GdS: Goals, potential and Ibra as his idol – why Sesko ticks a lot of boxes for Milan

By Oliver Fisher -

AC Milan know that they can no longer postpone an investment in a new centre-forward, and a report has outlined why Benjamin Sesko appears to be their choice.

La Gazzetta dello Sport begin their piece on Sesko by recalling his words a few months ago: “Don’t compare me to Haaland. We have height and speed in common, but our game is different.

“Ibrahimovic? I liked watching Zlatan, he entertained and had fun on the pitch.” The Slovenian centre-forward is a concrete target for Milan, who are thinking of him for the summer.

Due to some characteristics and a partly shared path, Sesko has been compared to Haaland since his arrival at Red Bull Salzburg, who scored plenty of goals in Austria in the 2019-20 season before moving to Germany and then to England.

Born in Radece, a picturesque lakeside village in Slovenia on 31 May 2003, the striker now playing for RB Leipzig has found himself faced with the title of being the ‘new Erling’ on several occasions.

In 2019, Salzburg’s scouts bet on him by bringing him to their academy where he grew one step at a time at a training centre that is futuristic in its facilities and the data they use.

Before playing at the top of Austrian football Sesko cut his teeth for a couple of seasons at Liefering, the club’s satellite team where many big names have passed over the years, such as Daka and Szoboszlai.

Returning to base, he took over from Haaland, who flew to Dortmund in 2020. With Salzburg he made 79 appearances, 29 goals and 11 assists, winning two league titles and an Austrian Cup in just over two years.

Having moved to Leipzig in the summer, another club in the Red Bull galaxy, he has seen the pitch a little less for some time now with seven goals in 23 appearances across all competitions this season but only eight starts.

With the likes of Lois Openda, Xavi Simons, Yussuf Poulsen and Dani Olmo present there is a lot of competition, and at 21 years old there is no lack of time to grow for Sesko, but it might be at another club.

Milan have had him on their radar for a while and his agent Elvis Basanovic was at the club for a chat with Paolo Maldini in 2022, but at that moment there was no chance to start a real negotiation.

The striker has already seen Milan and San Siro up close thanks to the 2022-23 Champions League group stage encounter, playing 50 minutes across the first (1-1) and the second games (4-0 to Milan).

The other curiosity leads to Ibrahimovic, now a consultant for Cardinale’s Milan and who has always been his idol: “Ibra? When I see a player like him, I feel really happy.”

Sesko is a No.9 with good finishing, an imposing physique and remarkable speed despite being 1.95m tall. Up until now he has never scored a lot, but he often creates thanks to his technical ability.

Speaking of the national team, Sesko today boasts two notable records: he is the youngest debutant for Slovenia (18 years old) and the youngest goalscorer too (against Malta on 8 October 2021, at 18 years and 130 days). Milan have taken note.

    1. The Curious Case of Benjamin Sesko, they’re trying to convince him, but they won’t sign him unless they sell our stars. He’s like younger Haaland and fits Giroud’s shoes 😀

  1. He’s an interesting prospect. I think Milan should make a move. His height and imposing figure would certainly add height to our attack.
