GdS: Win against Juventus is Pioli’s victory – the Milan boss got bold selection choices right

By Oliver Fisher -

AC Milan registered their biggest three points of the season in an almost faultless performance during the 3-0 win over Juventus last night.

As La Gazzetta dello Sport writes (via MilanNews), yesterday’s match against the Bianconeri was a very important one not only for Milan, but also for Stefano Pioli whose position – according to some outlets – had come under scrutiny. This is despite the continuous signals of confidence from the club, as even before the match director Paolo Maldini declared that they will go ahead with him regardless of how the season ends.

In recent weeks there has also been criticism of Pioli, who responded by getting virtually everything right during the 3-0 victory at the Allianz Stadium. The most important and probably decisive choice playing Brahim Diaz from the first minute behind Zlatan Ibrahimovic as the Spaniard scored the first goal, won the penalty and caused a lot of problems.

It appeared a gamble to use the 21-year-old and leave Rebic, Leao and Mandzukic on the bench, but given the result, Pioli’s decision was absolutely perfect. After the match, the Rossoneri coach explained his choice as follows: “We always try to choose the players best suited for their characteristics, Calhanoglu and Diaz are better at working on the frontline.”
