Salzburger Nachrichten: Glasner suggests Bayern and Leipzig directors amid Rangnick doubts

Ralf Rangnick has still not made a final call on his future, prompting Oliver Glasner to suggest two alternative directors.

Milan fans are hoping that the week of decisions has finally arrived, as the entire management and coaching staff still need to be named after the management cull two weeks ago. Only the CEO position has been temporarily filled by Massimo Calvelli, who has taken over from Giorgio Furlani.

Glasner and Rangnick are the leading two names for head coach and technical director. Their arrivals seemed to be linked, but it’s not out of the question that the Austrian coach – who is in pole position to replace the sacked Allegri – could arrive at Milanello even without the German.

Rangnick in the balance

The Austrian newspaper Salzburger Nachrichten (via MilanNews) confirms that Rangnick – the current coach of the Austrian national team – has long had a contract extension offer until 2028 from the Federation on the table.

The Austrian FA have already accepted all his requests to remain in his position beyond the World Cup, which begins in a few days. However, the German has spoken several times with Milan and is ‘very intrigued’ by the possibility of taking over, after being initially linked in 2020.

Rangnick has outlined certain conditions to take the job at Milan, including full power and complete decision-making autonomy. Gerry Cardinale hasn’t yet given the German a response but is leaning towards hiring Glasner regardless.

If Rangnick’s arrival at Milan falls through, the former Crystal Palace manager would prefer to work with a German-speaking sporting director and has reportedly mentioned Christoph Freund of Bayern Munich and Marcel Schäfer of RB Leipzig.

  1. So- transfer window opens in 3 weeks, preseason starts in a little over a month, and we STILL dont have any managment structure, coach, anything.
How exactly do they think to plan any steps for a new season, let alone any signings?
All I see is its going to be a panic sell/buy like last 2 summers, no cohesion between a coach and the club and they will again wonder why it doesnt work? I know its world cup season, but by now they should have at least announce coach and sporting director.

    1. And we have to at least get the executives/directors /coaches sorted by June 16th according to Serie A rules

    2. Gerry will hand-pick the players and negotiate the deals himself. He’ll probably choose the formation and starters for next season as well. Heck, he might even be the team captain now that Leao & MM16 will leave.

  2. I suspect that Cardinale is not going to accept Rangnick’s long list of demands, which would essentially turn Milan into a version of Red Bull Milan, which actually would not be a bad thing, especially for developing young players.
But then there is Ibrahimovich, and his poisonous, cancerous influence on Cardinale’s decision making is still there.
So, yeah, I doubt Rangnick is coming. It’s really a simple decision, yes, accept his demands, no, he’s not coming.

  3. Milan don’t need a German Speaking Director. Milan need a brilliant/experienced football mind like Ralf Ragnick. But Zlatan is afraid of losing his place & his voice because of Ragnick. He’s looking to hire another Allegri & Tare. Two scapegoats they can fire at any time.
