Gullit ‘convinced’ by De Ketelaere as he assesses Milan’s season so far

By Oliver Fisher -

Ruud Gullit believes that AC Milan are not finding things as easy as they did last year and urged fans and the media to be patient with Charles De Ketelaere.

Gullit is a man who knows what it takes and what it means to win with Milan, even though more than 35 years have passed since the beginning of his adventure with the Rossoneri. It was back in the summer of 1987 when Silvio Berlusconi was president and Arrigo Sacchi was the head coach that he was lured to Italy.

For obvious reasons the Dutchman still keeps an eye on Serie A and Milan in particular to see how they are getting on, even though the club and the league are not at the peak of their powers as they were in the late 1980s into the 1990s as he remembers.

La Gazzetta dello Sport spoke with Gullit about Milan’s campaign after the Scudetto win and the struggles of a player like De Ketelaere who joined in the summer but is finding it difficult to make a contribution.

How do you judge Milan’s season so far?

“It’s difficult. They’re fighting and suffering. I’d say that so far everything hasn’t been as easy as it was last year. Maybe because in 2021-22 everything went in the right direction, while in this first part of the season the results weren’t as expected. In football, however, you never know: in the Champions League, the Rossoneri won the first leg of the round of 16 against Tottenham… Let’s see how it ends.”

What chances do the Italian sides have of going through?

“It’s hard to say. In my day all the best players were in Italy, while now they’re in Spain and England. The Champions League is a tough competition for the Italians. So far they’ve done well because I remain convinced that Serie A plays a lot football, but when you need a ‘spark’, only footballers with particular qualities can give you that.”

One of these had to be De Ketelaere who instead is struggling in the Rossoneri. Is it right to wait for him?

“The Belgian is young and a great talent. Italian football isn’t easy and you have to understand its difficulties, adapt to tactics. He started well, but then got lost a bit. I’m convinced that if they give him time and confidence it will do well.”

Do you still remember that goal they disallowed for offside in the 1988-89 Champions League semi-final at the Bernabeu?

“What offside?! It was an absolutely legitimate goal, but then  there were decisions in your favour and against. You had to accept that it happened. And, then, in Madrid there were often decisions against… After the first leg was 1-1, we showed our value in the 5-0 home win.”

  2. Charles De Ketelaere is the most low iq player i ever seen his movement is wrong his position is wrong its like this is the first time he play football , when he join our club i thought its because he doesn’t know our game plan our system but now there is no excuse with the way he is moving on the football field , if this guy was black we will see many football analysts rip him to pieces with the way his low iq play ,

    1. Clearly the great football oracle milan die hard fan knows better than former legends like Gullit and Shevchenko amongst others. Come one if you dont understand how idiotic you sound then ill bet your iq is well below average yourself and yours must be around iq 70

      1. those legend doesn’t watch milan games every day like i do and do you really think they gonna criticize player that their friend maldini brought for 30+ million on media !!!
and i guess i understand football better then most because the only player i was hyped about joining our team in summer was malick thiaw i said he is going to be our best signing and i was right ,cdk suck the way he move and position show he is low iq player 6 month and he is still doesn’t make positional mistake and his movement is just wrong all the time that just how low iq , i’m not even talking about his talent as player btw no head coach will play players like that in any team its like playing 10 vs 11

        1. Yes, he didn’t watch, he competed woth the shirt and won everything with Milan. How do you think he knows that CDK started well and suffered after?
You can put a donkey in a class everyday and and teach him how how to read. guess what the result…..

  3. i criticize letting franck kessie contract run out because of our salary budget limiting and the impact that decision gonna have in our season i was right ,
i criticize the club strategy of putting salary cap on the affect that gonna have in our ability to resign our bet players i was right now every year we gonna lose important players like leao and any other players that improve in the future i’m right so far ,
i criticize our transfers strategy of going for talent and not proving players and the effect that gonna have in our future as and i was right so show some respect i’m one the few milan fans that understand how modern football work ,
milan strategy right now signing young talent some they gonna hit lot of them gonna be miss , and when they hit and become important players they gonna need salary that milan can’t offer because of salary cap how the f that strategy gonna work in the long run or short term i love my milan i hate seeing it die slowly like this

    1. Im not saying you are wrong about everything but you should understand that the salary cap was a necessity as the club was in sh*t up to its neck and it was a means to limit the bleeding. This project has been proven right and the scudetto and the last 3 seasons performances has done it as well.
I have no issues showing respect but if the same isnt done towards our players or former ones or the club then people really shouldnt ask me for that either as my allegiance is with the club foremost and not each and every fan of the club.
