‘Zero presence’ – Italian papers rate De Ketelaere’s display against Fiorentina

By Isak Möller -

Charles De Ketelaere failed to break his goalscoring drought last night and struggled to impose himself against an impressive Fiorentina side. As such, the Italian papers weren’t too kind this morning.

Gazzetta Dello Sport gave the Belgian a 5.5/10 as apart from a couple of nice actions, including a great cross for Junior Messias, he had no shots on target. ‘Zero presence in the last 20 metres’, as the newspaper put it.

Corriere Dello Sport had a similar verdict as they believe De Ketelaere was ‘more of a midfielder than a trequartista, without results’. They gave him a 5/10. Finally, Tuttosport also gave him a 5/10 as only the cross for Messias can be remembered.

In our player ratings, De Ketelaere was given a pass at 6/10 as he did have more than just a couple of good actions. It was a game, however, that was always going to be tough for the attacking midfielder.

It remains to be seen if he will start against Tottenham or if Brahim Diaz will be back from is injury by then.

    1. I don’t think it’s a serious opinion to say CDK had zero presence.

He did some things that were good, at least as in the bare minimum of what was expected situationally.

I wouldn’t get carried away given the space he was given when he was good. CDK was closed down much more often than he wasn’t. His one-sidedness is a pretty clear issue. He does not have 360 degrees open to him. He plays narrow and gets shut down because of it.

But by the same token, PR spin is PR spin. We didn’t spend EU35m on a guy only to end up back with Brahim.

Tonali cost half the price after 24 months of Serie A.

Patience is required but it depends on exactly what is being asked. I can live with mistakes even as many goals as he has missed but that’s not the story here. It’s his midfield play from defensive efforts to finding the ball and then doing something decisive.

He’s an asset which is devaluing by the week. We can wait 2 years for him playing at something like the level of Delofeu, for example, though he’s very good so maybe the bar is a bit high, to see if he can become Kaka. We cannot wait 2 years to see if he even has the game of a Delofeu. There is simply no way M&M spent all that money to be here, it not even being obvious that CDK is suited to the role we purchased him for.

So which is it? We can or cannot?

  1. He had a few nice one-touch passes but it was a really poor performance for all attack line
Especially Rebic, who will definitely will leave

  2. Cdk played better out of rebic and giroud. It would be nice to have bonaventura back! 😂 Hes better than diaz and cdk and rebic and well most of our options. Were awful at set pieces. We could do with him helping that out too. Got a few years left at 33. Definitely need some better back up players.

  3. CDK is the most stiff, square, static and predictable player I’ve seen in quite a few years. Can anyone imagine him ever dribbling through people with confidence like Kaka, for example? No. He looks like a basketball player that was invited to spend a day practicing with his favorite soccer team.

There is just too big of a gap between what we are seeing and what we need. No human can make that big of a change.

  4. Dia adalah seorang pengejar bola ke depan…dan si bodoh Pioli menginginkan dia jadi gelandang….
