Scudetto precedent and a 222-minute wait: All the key stats from Milan’s win against Genoa

By Oliver Fisher -

It was not a vintage display from AC Milan but they got the job done as they beat Genoa 2-0 at San Siro to ensure they remain top at Easter.

It was a win that was much needed in front of the biggest crowd of the season as goals from Leão early in the first half and Messias late in the second half secured three valuable points. Below are the best stats from the game, via the official website

➤ Milan have picked up over 70 points after 33 Serie A games for the first time since 2010-11, when they then won the Scudetto at the end of the season.

➤ Milan have won a Serie A match with at least a two-goal difference for the first time since January against Venezia (3-0).

➤ Stefano Pioli is only the third head coach in Milan history to keep a clean sheet in at least six games in a row in a single Serie A season, after Fabio Capello and Nereo Rocco.

➤ Milan found the net in Serie A 222 minutes after their last goal – on 19 March against Cagliari scored by Ismaël Bennacer. The Algerian midfielder today played his 100th match for the Rossoneri in all competitions.

➤ Rafael Leão – who has scored for the first time since 25 February – has found the net in the most Serie A home games in 2022: five, each of his last five. Furthermore, three of the Portuguese forward’s last four league goals have come against Ligurian sides (Spezia, Sampdoria and Genoa).

➤ Leão has been directly involved in 12 goals (nine goals, three assists) in the league this season, equaling his record in a single Serie A campaign (also 12 in the previous term).

➤ Since last season, only Zlatan Ibrahimović (27) has had a hand in more Serie A goals than Rafael Leao (24) among AC Milan players.

➤ Genoa are now the 17th different team, against whom Leão has scored in Serie A. Since his arrival in Italy in 2019/20, the only Under-23 player to have done better is Dusan Vlahović.

➤ Junior Messias has scored at San Siro in Serie A after six-game drought at home; the Brazilian’s last goal at home was back on 6 January against Roma (3-1).
