Kjaer hits out at FIFA after armband debacle: “It is absolutely ridiculous”

By Oliver Fisher -

AC Milan defender Simon Kjaer has hit out at FIFA over the controversy that has arisen regarding the ‘One Love’ armband some countries were hoping to wear.

Kjaer made his first appearance of the tournament yesterday afternoon in Doha, with his team drawing 0-0 against Tunisia in the first match of Group D, one which also includes Theo Hernández and Olivier Giroud’s France.

At the end of the game, Kjaer spoke about the situation that has arisen regarding the armband which was meant to be worn given he is captain of Denmark but in the end they – along with other nations like England, Wales and the USA – did not wear it.

The veteran defender chose to speak out against FIFA, given that they forbidden the captains of their national teams from wearing the One Love armband with the colours of the rainbow, and they imposed the sanction of a yellow card for anyone who does.

“It is absolutely ridiculous that FIFA have put us in this position. This is completely against the values I support,” he said (via PianetaMilan).

“It simply doesn’t make sense. We have reached the point where you risk a yellow card when you enter the pitch. We will not compromise on sportsmanship.

“I can understand that there are people saying ‘so get a yellow card’, but what happens if I get one at random after 5 minutes? I put my team in a disadvantageous situation. We come here to give our best.”

  1. Love Kjaer as a player and moreso human being. However this problem had everyone shooting themselves in the foot. When he says “I put my team in a disadvantageous situation.” It sort of comes.off as.if.thats more important human rights. If FIFA is all about inclusivity then the games should not have been held in Qatar. The question then is why,? And that has to do with money. So FIFA is this organization of moral principles so they shod just not act like it. I have a bigger problem with this corporate virtue signalling that’s fake and seems Fifa is as fake as.u can get
