MN: Leao eager to build on an excellent 2023 – January crucial on and off the field

Today is the day that Rafael Leao will reunite with the rest of the squad and with head coach Stefano Pioli to resume training ahead of Serie A getting back underway.

MilanNews recall that Leao had a stellar 2022 and he is ready to get playing again, with the mission being to cut the gap to Napoli given that they built an eight-point lead heading into the winter break.

Last season from January to May he dragged Milan to the Scudetto with a streak of 7 goals and countless other decisive plays, such as the hat-trick of assists in the decisive match against Sassuolo. In the first part of this season he then scored 7 goals in 20 appearances between Serie A and the Champions League.

However, things cannot stop there as the Portuguese winger will have to carry the weight of Milan on his shoulders and lead them to the difficult mission of overturning the gap to Napoli, playing in the Supercoppa Italia, going deep in the Coppa Italia and hopefully beating Spurs in the Champions League.

January is full of crucial games in Milan’s season but it will also be a key month for Leao’s future. His contract expires in 2024 and Maldini and Massara are willing to make an effort and meet the player’s demands, but the fine owed to Sporting CP complicates everything.

If an agreement can be found on how to cushion the penalty that Leao owes to his former club, things could quickly move forward, however there is also the possibility of things dragging on.
