Leao says Milan ‘is a top club’ but admits he wants new experience ‘in the future’

By Isak Möller -

Rafael Leao is currently under contract with AC Milan until 2024 and the Rossoneri are working on extending that agreement. The winger himself has now spoken about the matter, admitting that eventually he wants to move abroad.

Leao was named the best player in Serie A last season and he has continued to do well this campaign. Therefore, it’s not exactly a surprise that Milan are working on a contract renewal, but it’s proving to be very difficult.

Speaking to the Portuguese radio station RDP Africa (via MilanNews) Leao made it very clear that he has a contract with Milan and thus is focused on the Rossoneri. However, he also admitted that he eventually wants a new experience.

“Experience in a new league? Yes, in the future. Now I’m focused on Milan, with whom I have a contract. I like the city a lot. Milan is a top club, a historic club. I’m living one of the best moments of my career,” he stated.

It remains to be seen how the negotiations will end, but it’s clear that Milan will have to make a significant effort to get the yes from Leao and his entourage. It might be worth it, though, considering his qualitites.

  1. Then let’s not wait for his contract to run out. Unfortunately this means we’d have to sell to the highest bidder this January..

  2. It was always going to happen. The only people who see italian clubs as their final destination these days are italians and of those we have very very few. Leao is a piece to a puzzle. He helped immensely with the scudetto, now it’s time to cash in. Thank you and best of luck… let’s hope our management sells and doesn’t let yet another huge asset contract run out

    1. No that’s not true, also non Italians would like to stay in Serie a clubs. Osimhem loves Napoli and id really know but Martinez loves Inter aswell, because they gave him love but especially bc he probably doesn’t have a agent or a dad who wants him gone for money

  4. Leao wanting to experience another league is no big deal. Ambitious people like to try themselves in higher levels of competitions. Serie A is probably a tier 4 league in Europe, behind EPL, LaLiga, and Bundesliga. Milan and Serie A are only a final destination to Italian footballers. For the majority of the other players, it is just a launching pad or temporary stop.
“In the future” might mean next summer or 5 years down the road. In the present, he needs to be re-signed

  5. What player doesn’t want to experience a better league? That’s Normal. And for those that are in denial – Serie A isn’t it. It’s the EPL hands down. So this is normal and glad he was honest. Let’s hope he resigns and stays a few more years – then we can sell – if needed and he wants to leave – from a position of strength – and at much more than 120M. Sign him then if he wants to leave in a few years sell to the highest bidder. I’m the meantime hopefully we can win another Scudetto and progress further in CL.

  6. Yeah thats normal guys.. but milan sell rather than let player go for free, should be the Normal too (currently its the opposite).. i dont think he will sign contract extension, he know milan cannot sell him in jan since we will jeopardise our campaign if we do.. and milan will need bow to him in his last year of contract or else loose him for free, same goes for bennacer.. and players before them.. contract extension m&m achilles heel..

    1. They won’t let him leave for free it they aren’t selling this January. We aren’t selling in middle of CL knock out stages or when we are in hunt for second straight Scudetto. Can’t replace him in Janaury – most players are not available this time of year. If he doesn’t resign in January they will sell in summer. Maldini learned his lesson (at he hard way unfortunately) and won’t let a player walk again for nothing. 18 months or 12 months – Leao will still fetch the same transfer fee. He has top 5 potential. Transfer fee from the big clubs will be there.
