Genuine admiration or ‘veiled dig’ – Leao’s ‘real football’ post draws eyes

Rafael Leao broke his social media silence to comment on the show that PSG and Bayern Munich put on last night.

As La Gazzetta dello Sport point out, Leao posted ‘Real football…’ followed by applause emojis. Despite recently taking his Instagram account offline, the forward remains active on social media, commenting on the spectacular 5-4 game between PSG and Bayern Munich in the first leg of the Champions League semi-final.

A ‘veiled dig’?

Was this a genuine admiration from Leao for two teams that have enchanted fans across Europe, or a ‘veiled dig’ at the playing style of his Milan, who have managed just 16 goals in 15 games in the second half of the season.

The answer to the question remains unanswered, but one thing is certain: Leao’s tweet has divided his fan base. The Rossoneri striker has received nearly 7,000 retweets and over 1,500 comments.

They ranged from those accusing him of being lazy, not applying himself enough and not having developed in recent years, to those urging him to stay at Milan despite his coach’s defence-first approach.

Certainly, even when it doesn’t directly concern the Rossoneri, Leao finds a way to stir up discussion. As a reminder, the paper spoke this morning of a potential summer sale for the ex-Lille man, in order to rebuild the struggling attack.

  1. I can see where he’s coming from, but let’s not pretend he was ANY good under Fonseca, under Conceição or during Pioli’s last season and thus despite all these coaches having different playing style.

    1. That’s irrelevant. Doesn’t matter if Leao was “good” or not. He can still understand good football, as most of us can, and he’s right. And yeah, I think it’s a dig. The parting shots are beginning.

Anyone thinking we’re going to sign players for 4-3-3 next season is deluded. Gila, Goretzka, Sorloth and Zaniolo or someone who can play SS. Then more catenaccio and 1-0 wins. Let’s see if Allegri can improve on 3rd place. Then in the CL we’ll probably get knocked out in the first knockout stage. It’s what Redbird wants: Top 4 and CL participation in perpetuity, but I guess that’s better than 8th place.

      1. 352 won’t work in Europe and Max has been around long enough to understand that. Hope he has a plan.

As for “good football” – it’s easier to play it when you have the squad and the bankroll for it. Try playing that with this sorry roster….

        1. Thank you! We have have 4 top players on this squad. It is nothing short of a miracle that we are 2nd place. Besides Maignan, Rabiot, and Modric I can’t think of a single player who could walk into the starting 11 of Napoli Juve or Inter.

        2. I think Max knows and managers players well but I genuinely don’t think he understands football from the last 15 years at all.

  2. Nonsense. Haaland wrote something similar and newspapers wrote stories with the title “Haaland takes dig at Arsenal”. 😂😂😂😂😂 Leao was maybe talking about the meaning of life? Or his manager? OR THE GAME HE WAS WATCHING?

  3. Yeah real football where Kvara is made to look like Maradona by the Bayern defenders, giving away a handball when there’s 30s left and Neuer making 0 saves whole game

Coming from Leao who looks slower than Bonera now.

      1. is that why Calabria had him locked down every time they faced each other?

Do you watch games or just love to comment nonsense?

        1. 1st of all Milan doubled Kvara when Calabria “had him locked down”, 2nd of all Kvara, in his 1st season in serie A won the scudetto and the MVP. So yeah, Serie A made Kvara look like Maradona.
For once think before you comment

          1. yeah celebrating sh*t defenses of Bayern is certainly a choice of yours

For people like you tackling needs to be illegal so players can show off and score goals

You still dont understand that I meant he wasnt anytihng special and its the stupid defending that made him look good, the Bayern defenders barely touched him all game and Neuer himself made literally 0 saves

Probably too hard for your pea brain to comprehend

          2. You’re not addressing his response and just talking sh*t now. He called you out on your Kvara point so you pivot to something else entirely different?

        2. Pea brain, you still stuck on stupid talking about bayern defenders and 1 game.
I brought up that he looked very good in the league that supposed to be known for its defense.
He was the mvp of that league in his 1st season playing there coming from a low level league.
He has 10 goals and 5 assists in UCL this season. They didn’t all come in 1 game vs Bayern.
          Find another way to cope.

          1. you are the one coping here, another fake fans Chelaea who doesnt watch any games and is addicted to social media lmao

    1. In serie A, not just Milan.
PSG put 5 on Inter in the final.
That Italian sit back and defend tactics its scary if you give up an early goal as Inter did and after that it was belt to a$s.

      1. PSG and Lens are the only teams that free score in Ligue1, everywhere else Serie A is ahead. Also in terms of Italian sit back and defend, outside of us and Napoli no team plays that style. It’s only implemented by Conte and Allegri, Allegri can switch it up but our team is completely fragile if we play that way, as we’ve seen. If we had the personnel it would be a different matter but we simply don’t have the calibre of players to play that style. That’s why it’s defense first. We’ve seen Allegri play attacking football both with us and Juventus, but both Milan during his first stint and Juventus had WAY better players.

      1. Leao wants to all out attack and not defend, which is what that game was. Goal fest and a manual for how not to defend. At Milan he is doing neither.

  4. Leao is a very good player. I dispute that he is elite (neither is Pulisic). That said, up until this year his performances have been good in terms of output. He’s never going to defend well or be part of a high press. He’s a sprinter, not a middle distance runner. I always found it amusing to watch the wide receivers in competitions try to complete a two mile run against other athletes. Allegri has taken two 15 goal a year wingers and cut their output in half including assists. I can’t imagine either he or Pulisic are happy, especially when they are watching CL or attack minded football.

    1. I for once agree with your submission, even when Alegri switched to 4-3-3, he used the wrong player, when we all clamor for 4-3-3 we didn’t ask him to still use Leao as a point man

    2. “llegri has taken two 15 goal a year wingers and cut their output in half including assists. I can’t imagine either he or Pulisic are happy, especially when they are watching CL or attack minded football.”

Couldn’t have said it better myself. 💯spot on.

  5. We will give Leao the benefit of the doubt and believe it was the football lover in him making that comment. We all sat in owe last night for the level of play on show. However it would be foolish of him to take a dig at either club or league because he is part of it. We all love a bit of controversy but we will leave it at that. BS…

    1. This is just media noise, and people eat it up. Everyone who watched that game was enjoying the Atalanta defense those teams were playing.

  6. Imagine watching that Bayern- PSG match, then watching Milan and Juventus with both teams playing for a zero – zero draw. No wonder Serie A is dying.

      1. Completely irrelevant to what he was saying yet you’re chiming in just to talk sh*t. Quality contributions every single time.

      2. But the new gen kid is making sense here, on the other hand you are not been objective, serie A is suffering really, Serie champion Napoli couldn’t even make it out of the group stage, Curent serie A best team was knocked out by Bodo glimt, serie A giant Juventus was stopped by Galatasaray, now defend the statement that Serie A is dying……just to add thes ame PSG team in question thumped 5 whooping goals past serie A best

    1. Serie A is dying for many reasons outside of that draw, but it was certainly a terrible advertisement for a league game. Lazio-Udine or Cagliari-Atalanta was certainly better.

Milan-Juve was a valuable point between two pragmatic coaches that everyone knew would end in a draw.

  7. Anything from Leao will always attract Italian Presses, they obviously make a lot of sale from anything with Leao, It’s just an opinion, plain and simple

  8. Leao is right. I watched the replay of that game last night. It was like watching a different sport and reminded me what I love about the sport. Relentless, aggressive, technically wonderful at times. It wasn’t just the goals, it was all of the passes that stretched the defenses, the strong press, the effort to play through the press.

While Bayern played all attack, PSG did not. PSG defends well and is ruthless on the counter. You can defend and still be serious about attacking when you get the chance.
