Christian Pulisic of Chelsea

L’Equipe: Why it is unlikely that Lyon can pay €25m for Chelsea winger Milan want

AC Milan remain in talks with Chelsea over Christian Pulisic, a report claims, while suggestions Lyon have made a substantial bid seem wide of the mark.

The Athletic reported this morning that Milan made their first verbal offer for Pulisic which was worth €14m, and it is an amount not deemed enough by Chelsea, while Lyon have offered €25m and they seem inclined to accept.

However, the news seems to have aroused some confusion in France. L’Equipe (via MilanNews) write that Lyon are under close observation by the financial institution of Ligue 1 because the American group that bought the team has liquidity problems.

They must present a business plan and economic guarantees to get the go-ahead even for registration for the next league season, which shows how precarious things are for them.

As per the source, Lyon are in talks with the DNCG which is the organisation responsible for monitoring and supervising the accounts of clubs in France. During these discussions, they must establish an economic plan and get their approval.

It seems unlikely therefore that Lyon – who did not secure a place in the Champions League or any European competition – would pay €25m for the USA international.

  1. Seems rather obvious the way the UK journalist sent out 2 reports within an hour of one another saying Milan made a verbal offer that was too low and then Lyon made a written offer that Chelsea were delighted with that this was some sort of l publicity stunt to try to pressure Milan. Who knows how it will end up, but Pulisic is ultimately the one who controls where he goes.

      1. He has one year left on his deal. If he doesn’t get the team he wants, Chelsea can pay him his 14m for the final year of his contract while they don’t want him there and then he can choose his team as a free agent. Chelsea don’t have anywhere near the control of the situation that they are trying to project. The transfer fee isn’t the only thing they’d be giving up if they don’t make a deal with Milan, they’d have to pay almost the same amount just to have the player wait out the last year of his contract.
