Libero: Abate, Shevchenko, Motta – Milan evaluating interim and long-term options

By Oliver Fisher -

Stefano Pioli was confirmed as the head coach yesterday, but it is clear that he will have to immediately make a change in his Milan’s moment of crisis otherwise he may lose the support of the ownership.

The Milan management obviously have to prepare for all eventualities and that includes the potential that the team cannot get themselves out of the current rut and that they continue to struggle in the league, putting top four at risk.

As reported by Libero (via MilanNews), in the event of a change of head coach being forced during the current campaign, an interim manager would be appointed to guide things through until the end of the season.

Andriy Shevchenko is a name that has emerged and he has been offered to the management through intermediaries, but this option does not particularly warm them. The most likely scenario would instead be Ignazio Abate being promoted.

In the summer, the club would then go for a profile with a little more experience. A name that is very popular for the future is that of Thiago Motta, who is doing excellent things this year with Bologna.

  1. Xavi Alonso,Antonio Conte and the Girona Manager plus One From Faramce League and Barazilian League as well as Zinidine Zidane and Marceelo Galardo
Take one Interim or Takr Rght now long term manager instead of two Operations.
All in all Pioli is to be fired before next game
And stop Decesion Crisis of dissmising Pioli

    1. None of them are available, also if we sack Pioli we still have to pay him until 2025. So we would need to keep paying Pioli and buy one of these other coaches out of their contracts which is just as expensive as buying a player, Zidane and Conte won’t join, and Conte usually gets €8-10m per season which makes him higher paid than any player at our club. Best option would be Abate, Gilardino or Motta.

      1. If you pay Conte his valuation, you will get trophy, smart tactician and very build up strategy. So it’s worth if you are a smart. Not just greedy, owner

For Carlo. He set his sight on Brasilian national team. Icing needed to finish a spectacular career

          1. And I have to write ad nauseam about how the squad isn’t set up for 3-5-2/5-3-2, and how we’d have to have yet another transfer revolution including selling Leao, Chuwueze and probably Pulisic (I think Okafor would find space in a 2-striker system). Conte/Alonso will not (should not) happen.

        1. I agree with everyone else Conte is toxic, only loves Juve, and he’s closer to being washed than to being the next great Milan manager…
His Spurs team looked bad imo

  2. Just pick which coach style is suitable for us, maybe will boost team attributes like in FIFA, Abate is defender, Sheva is striker or winger, and Motta is midfielder 😀 😀

    1. It’s a summer too late for Orsolini. It should have been him and Pulisic, not Chukwueze, who were bought. Maybe if Leao is sold (as Pulisic would become the starting LW), but that is unlikely.

  3. Who the coach is won’t make a lot of difference. There is a massive hole in midfield. No defensive steel, no offensive creativity, and an inability to maintain the ball under pressure. Without two solid signings there, we will limp through the rest of the season. Speaking of limping, we don’t have defenders. Kjaer and Caldara are physically done at this level and Kalulu and Thiaw will be out for a while. We need to go all out on Kiwior. A striker is a waste of money unless you fix the midfield because they will only feed off scraps

    1. I disagree aside from striker I think it’s a top 16 team in Europe no question. I’m pretty sure the whole point of the conversations is because Pioli is underperforming with a strong team

    2. Benny will be back soon. That alone lifts the level of midfield and if Pioli has any sense (not counting on that) he’ll take advantage of Adli’s superior passing skills and raise the level of the midfield even more.

Striker is a waste of money? Well… Giroud cannot do it all by himself but “anyone” won’t do either as – like you said – the service is close to zero and even Haaland would struggle to score in this team.

  4. Sacking Pioli and appointing Abate would just screw up both the senior team and the primavera.

Pioli clearly has not lost the players. It is naive in the extreme to think that an interim coach is going to achieve better results than Pioli can with players who are still with him.

Having said that, he’s in his 4th year. Whether Milan wants to admit it or not, it is still in a phase of building a squad which can compete for top 4 in the league and push to the quarter finals of the champions league. It’s probablely still 18 months away.

Pioli bears some responsibility for the current predicament beyond tactics and his coaching. He didn’t take the opportunity to build the squad by giving the likes of Okafor and Chuku enough time early in the season so that he had the confidence to rotate. Players then broke down.

It’s basically Impossible for Pioli to proactively build the squad from here. He’s been at Milan too long, expectations are too high. His credibility with the players is linked to the scudetto and the UCL semi finals. He can’t now strip the project back.

Two things can be true at the same time. Pioli is not the root cause of all Milan’s problems, he wouldn’t still have the loyalty of the players if he was. But he’s almost certainly run his race. It’s now up to someone with fresh ideas to take the job on and finish off the development of the team.

Let Pioli coach the rest of the season. Start working on Motta. As much as I like Palladino, De Zerbi and Italiano they don’t have the aura of Motta.

    1. someone with a sensible comment. people asking for Conte, Zidane etc are dilusional. They wont come for many reasons, least of all money. Conte delivers if management buy his players (which we wont) and arguably they have all been offered better jobs and have turned them down. Let’s not kid ourselves, we are a big historical club, but the likes on ManU, PSG, Chelsea and even Atletico offer a lot more resources. HAving said that i agree with you, Pioli might not be the root of ALL problems but this is his ceiling. He did a superb job taking the club where it was (remember when he got it, it was a shtshow with Giampaolo, to a scudetto to the UCL. I will be always greatful because he gave us stability and took us here, but from here on out, we need fresh ideas, and that’s ok.

      1. @Bruno and @Daniel
Agreed, you both talk sense and live in the same reality as our beloved ACM.

I like the idea of Motta but wonder why people are saying Xavi Alonso woulden’t come. What did I miss?

        1. Re Xabi Alonso: 1. See my comments above and below; 2. A Bundesliga winning manager (assuming he wins) doesn’t go to a 3rd or 4th place Serie A team, even if it’s Milan, he goes to the EPL.

      2. Agreed.

But I would emphasise that the squad is not at the point that Conte, Zidane, etc would be worth it even if they were prepared to come and coach Milan.

Milan needs to find its next Sacchi, Capello or Ancelotti. There is a slight difference here, being that not only is long term stability necessary (something you wont get with a big name coach) but the coach is going to need to grow with the squad and the young players that are going to be brought in.

If we are going to maintain this sustainability model, and I think we should, and that is going to mean signing players to turn those players into stars as opposed to signing stars, which it has to, we are probably 4 seasons from being at the point that we can win a Scudetto and push into the semi finals of the UCL, and even win a UCL, regardless of who the opposition is (i.e. without having to rely on Conte not even being on the bench having already blow Tottenham up).

It’s not just about signing the next Leao, Thiaw or Musah. Players of that age need need 4,000 to to 5,000 minutes (which is about 2 full seasons of game time) during which experience and chemistry with teammates is developed before they’re reliable. You’re probably looking at a further 7,500 to 10,000 minutes before they’re hardened pros.

Developing its own stars is the only realistic path for Milan to get back to the top. It is absolutely possible but it is going to require ownership to have the patience and the balls to see the project through. It is going to require a coach who can develop players but who is also capable of evolving into a great coach.

That doesn’t mean that a Scudetto cannot be pinched as it was in 21/22 and that a good run in the UCL won’t happen in the meantime but it will not be Milan driving the result as much as it is about the opposition.

    2. You suck.. remember Milan finish 5th last season.. if Juv wasn’t punish..We need good coach with brain.. Milan play bad football.. sack him and bring coach.. with queen of Milan Krunic

    3. I think you’re right except for the last bit. De Zerbi is the better coach between him and Motta. He has the record to prove it and compliments from top top coaches. The issue with De Zerbi is that the window to get him went by this past summer. At this point he’s in line for a top 6 Prem job. There is also Farioli (Nice). Italiano would be “fine”, but I think he would achieve similar results to Pioli. Palladino is a complete no, as he plays 3-5-2 and that would be problematic for this squad. We’d have to sell 3 players (Leao, Pulisic and Chuwkueze) and bring in 5-6 new ones (a wingback for each side, at least one CB, if not two, and two strikers, one of which would be more of a second striker type, although CDK could occupy that role if he’s not bought out by Atalanta). We can’t afford another transfer “revolution”, literally and figuratively.

      1. There are 2 reasons I like Motta more than the other Italian coaches:

        1. defensive substance. Italiano and De Zerbi coached sides leak goals. Motta’s sides are still modern but there is more of a defensive sustainability and he’s adding the possession and attacking focus as the quality of players improve. De Zerbi is coming back to earth in the Premier League. He inherited a good team with good players and was able to add something new. There was a sugar hit and his system is great at showcasing players for sale. But can’t bring the tactical naivety displayed by RDB or Italiano to a big club that is trying to win trophies.

        2. I summarise as aura. I can see Motta having the immediate credibility to control basically any dressing room. De Zerbi and Italiano may well develop it but the jury is out as far as I am concerned. Good coaches, not coaches I would necessary trust to both develop the Milan squad and then take it to the top.

Admittedly I’m assuming Motta’s current run will be maintained. We saw Sottil have a really good early run last season which then fell apart.

  5. All this talk about coaches doesn’t matter at this point. Pioli isn’t going anywhere until the summer and that’s when you have to reassess to see what options are available.

I like Motta and Palladino, but neither has any big club experience. Conte is likely going to Juve. He will likely win them the Scudetto but will flop in Europe – because that’s what Conte does.

And those of you calling for DeZerbi…. seriously??? Have you seen Brighton’s record? LOL!!! That won’t fly at Milan…

    1. I’m surprised that you think going 6-4-3 at Brighton is unimpressive. The guy so far has been a chronic overachiever. What would Pioli’s record with Brighton be?

  6. As much as it hurts me I feel Milan’s best course of action is to remain with Pioli (unless to truly becomes untenable) until the end of the season. As others have pointed out there’s not really a coach available who would be an automatic upgrade. I like Motta, De Zerbi is the dream, wildcard idea: Ten Hag will be fired eventually, could he be the choice, proven track record with a smaller budget, used to working at a selling club. And I think Man U is an impossible job/toxic workplace at the moment. Look at the list of managers that failed there so I don’t hold that against him.
