Journalist claims Liverpool want Milan star in player-plus-cash deal – ‘Perfect heir to Mané’

By Oliver Fisher -

Rafael Leao is the subject of interest from Liverpool, a journalist has claimed, and they are preparing a player-plus-cash deal to try and land him.

Leao has been linked with a number of top clubs around Europe giving his status as one of the best wingers in the world at the age of 24. The Portugal international has scored 47 goals in 182 appearances for Milan in all competitions since arriving from Lille in the summer of 2019.

According to what is being reported by journalist Francois Plateau, Liverpool have identified Milan attacker Rafael Leão as the ‘perfect heir to Sadio Mané’. Not only that, but they could offer Luis Díaz plus cash for Leao in a bid to convince the Rossoneri.

Last June, Milan officially announced that Leao signed a contract renewal with the club. After many months of intense negotiating, the parties have agreed to continue their partnership until 2028 with a big pay rise involved.

Diaz meanwhile moved to Liverpool from Porto in 2022 for a reported €45m fee plus €15m in add-ons (via Wiki). The 26-year-old has gone on to make 70 appearances under Jurgen Clop, with 16 goals and 10 assists to his name.

In our recent Substack piece we broke down Geoffrey Moncada’s interview with Milan TV in which he discussed his journey to joining the club, the process of scouting players and his vision for the future.

  1. I don’t think Milan would ever take a player plus cash on Leao. Purely from Capital Gains point of view. They’d sell him cash in like as much as they could. AS THEY SHOULD.

  2. Well, for the Conte bois, this summer could be the summer of their dreams. We sell Leao for whatever he brings, let’s say 70m, assuming Mike doesn’t renew and goes goes for 60m. That’s 130m, plus the “usual” 50m for 180m. Let’s say they bump it up to 200m even for good ole Antonio. He can then use that to get 4-5 of “his” players, probably a real RWB, since we have none, a striker, a CDM, a CB and a GK, and done, we have the 3-5-2 park-the-bus dream team. I guess Chukwueze would have to be sold too, would bring maybe another 25m extra. Pulisic might survive as a second striker, as might Okafor. Fino Alla fine!

  3. I wouldnt be against the idea. He is a good player. Depends on how much cash we get. Diaz wont take the pay cut though to play in an inferior league and have less chance of winning things.
