Longo: Newcastle offer unlikely as Milan set transfer deadline for Thiaw

By Isak Möller -

Malick Thiaw has been linked with a move to Newcastle in the last few weeks, but the reality has never really matched these reports. As highlighted by a report this afternoon, an offer is not even close to arriving for the time being.

Thiaw has his breakthrough with Milan in the second half of the 2022-23 season, entering the frame during an injury crisis. However, last season wasn’t exactly what the Rossoneri fans were hoping for with some inconsistency displayed throughout.

His potential is undisputed, though, and Newcastle have been linked with the Geman defender in the last few weeks. According to Daniele Longo, there is indeed interest but Milan want at least €35m for the player, while there is not even ‘a shadow of an offer’ from the English side right now.

There is still time to get something going, but Milan will not sell Thiaw late in the mercato as they consider him a starter. In other words, if he were to leave, an adequate replacement would be needed and that would be difficult late in the summer. A transfer deadline of sorts has thus been set.

For now, both Milan and Thiaw are more than happy to continue together, while Newcastle have moved for Crystal Palace’s Marc Guehi. Interestingly, he has the same agency as Thiaw and perhaps that is how the interest came to life. Was signing Thiaw really Newcastle’s idea from the beginning, or was it a proposal from the agency?

      1. I don’t mind if he stays or is sold. I notice that Chalobah is for sale from Chelsea and Chelsea fans think he was their best defender last season. Could be a good replacement. Furlani, read my comments on sempre Milan lol

  1. I’d like people to observe one thing about Thiaws ball playing skills and courage, yes he’s a defender and defending should be his main thing (not that he’s awful at defending either), however his eye for progressive pass is very impressive to me. You’d always see him looking up for space between the opponent midfield to make a low accurate pass to our CF or AM. Our other CBs make too many passes between each other with little effort of urgency. Although of course it’s not been as frustrating in the friendlies with Fonseca. Kalulu is a master at passing the ball like 10 consecutive times to a fellow CB or nearest teammate as if that’s all a footballer is supposed to do. Thiaw will be useful.
