Theo Hernandez’s future remains very uncertain as AC Milan have been unable to reach an agreement on the contract renewal. According to a report, the left-back has also blocked a potential summer exit.
There is no doubt that the current season has been one of the worst of Hernandez’s professional career. He has been able to perform consistently, if at all, and there have been many uncharacteristic mistakes from him throughout.
Several factors are involved in the decline, including the uncertainty regarding the future. According to Daniele Longo, the renewal talks appeared to have reached a turning point in December/January, first with a meeting at Casa Milan and then a phone call after the Supercoppa Italiana win.
Then, however, the surprise €50m agreement between Milan and Como for the transfer of the left-back surfaced. The No.19 blocked the transfer and expressed his disappointment with the Rossoneri, which hasn’t made the situation any easier.
Furthermore, while Hernandez is a bit disappointing, Milan aren’t sure about committing to such an expensive contract given the performances this season. The dilemma will have to be resolved by the new sporting director, as the report continues, that much is clear.
Hernandez, through his entourage, has already made it known that he will remain at the club even without a renewal. In short, a summer exit has been blocked and this is putting Milan in a very difficult position.
I did expect for a long time that he’d leave on a free instead of being sold. From his perspective, there’s no benefit to leaving this summer unless he’s desperate to get out; he can make a lot more money by moving for free, he can have free choice of clubs and it gives him a season to restore his value (after a summer of rest).
If he can get his form back, it’s not the worst outcome for Milan either, he’d be super motivated for a final season where he’s earning his next contract. We probably left 70-80M on the table last summer but now Theo has all the power.
He could’ve been sold before extending his contract and gotten a huge salary somewhere else but he chose to stay.
He hasn’t been in good form all season. Just needs rest.
No team has ever offered anywhere near 70-80 million for you to say that “we probably left 70-80m on the table last summer”.
About him making more money if he leaves for free. I don’t know if you have noticed but teams are not lining up to give Theo a lot of money. They watch games, they are not thinking about Theo from 3,4 years ago, they are looking at who Theo is today. Not to mention that they are also looking at his poor attitude. They are not banding over backwards to sign a player with a poor character.
Theo is either going to resign this summer or be sold. If he refuses to leave he should not be playing and then we will see how much power he has and how he will restore his value watching games instead of playing.
Yes of course. Milan will keep a player like Theo with Futuro but will spend 25M on a lesser player to play? It won’t happen, you are totally delusional, and especially about the part that nobody wants Theo. They guy was one of 2 top left backs for years and suddenly he is out of form for a season (and only defensively, attacking he is the best on the planet, still). Nobody wants him. Yeah right.
You need to work on your reading comprehension.
Who said that nobody wants Theo?
The conversation is about his value and how much teams will be willing to pay him.
And yes, Milan will sign a player who will play at LB, let Theo know that he isn’t a starter which will force Theo hand to leave in the summer or risk his value, salary wise, plummeting even more, on top of losing his position, if he hasn’t already lost it with the France NT.
Roma did that with that bum Zaniolo, and like it or not, he accepted a transfer.
Theo has been regressing for a few years, not only this season. Defensively, he has always been a cone, while offensively, he is the fastest going forward, not actually being the best attacking. When he attacks, he loses 9 out of every 10 balls, which then leads to a counter attack for the other team.
Theo’s regression has been coinciding with Milan’s. Don’t you think? New SD, New Coach, New Stimuli… Who knows? Maybe with a few key additions these guys start playing well again, so long as there’s an organized structure and a serene environment at the club…
Crazy Thought.
“Theo’s regression has been coinciding with Milan’s. Don’t you think? New SD, New Coach, New Stimuli… Who knows? Maybe with a few key additions these guys start playing well again, so long as there’s an organized structure and a serene environment at the club…”
He can’t do much worse now can he? I’m sure he’d improve if we got a proper SD & coach and a true DM so he didn’t have to defend, defend, defend all the time for two. Or more.
@ACM1899
Why is Theo the only one regressing “with” Milan? Pulisic is having another banger of a season, Leao is doing OK, Reijnders is doing better than last season, Thiaw and Gabbia were fine until Conceicao. Maybe the only other player who can be said to have “regressed” is Maignan…and coincidentally(?) his contract is also up in 2026. So it seems that these players aren’t regressing due to the overall performance of the club, but because they’ve got their minds elsewhere.
No one wanted him the summer period, no bids came for him
They need to pay him the 5-6 mil/year he wants to extend his contract just so they can sell him in the summer of 2026 (or maybe he comes back to his usual self). Not paying him 2 mil extra a year and then lose him on free transfer next year is MUCH more expensive.
Give him 2 mil more for the 25/26 season and then sell him for 50 mil in the summer of 2026
Yes dannyboy. Theo deserve pay rise. He done 3 job for milan:
1) as right back.
2) as drama queen to make milan famous.
3) as hairstyle model to make milan famous.
He deserve double his salary because he done 3 job for milan. Give him his 8 million demand salary.
I hope he can rediscover his form. Leao, Theo and Maignan were instrumental in the scudetto win. They were considered the core that the team would built around. Now they are a shadow of their former self. Its kinda sad that many of the fans want to sell them.
make his value plummet even further than… get de Cuyper and don’t let him play at all… let’s see 1 year without game time what effect will have on his career.
Also the world cup is in 2026, I don’t think he wants to lose out on the spot in the team.
I would really like to see the manager that benches Theo for a lesser player to make a point at his new club. And then makes the club spend 25M on a lesser player while having some other positions uncovered because there are no funds to sign everyone necessary. I can tell you there aren’t many managers that stupid, and I really doubt any of those will join Milan.
We signed Emerson Royal for 15M to make a point to our captain and homegrown player Calabria who we sold for peanuts (and then beat us in the league a few weeks later). Calabria at his peak is definitely no Hernandez, but it would feel similar, basically “if you’re not willing to extend on our terms then we’ll replace you”.
glaze, Theo all you want. but in Milan’s current state, if he refuses to leave for any club… that just is not loving the badge, that’s just loving the money…
and who would ever go to Como, if you are already an established name in the game? winter rejection was natural and quite obvious
Just sit his ass on the bench a whole year then if that was his intention for leaving for free
His intention was obviously to sign a new contract, said it publicly how many times? And his agent as well. You people aren’t really Milan fans, you are just here to insult players randomly.
yeah the way he strolls on the field and is lazy to run off-the-ball shows dedication lmao… and if you aren’t gonna extend, you are in your final year… Gigi was snake for that but not Theo? how does that makes sense then?
Basically what I said over a month ago. But he will sign a new contract in the end. Almost any coach they can bring in won’t ignore a player like Theo or will ask the club to spend 20-25M on a lesser player so he could make an example of Theo. They are not mo*ons.
Theo knows no other big club would put up with his nonsense. Here he can give as little effort as he wants, get stupid red cards that cost us games, make selfish decisions that costs us games, and still be in the starting lineup every week. Of course he wants to stay.
He is starting every week because the club has failed to adress his position. Ballo-Touré was a failure and every other fullback we have is mostly a right back while Bartesaghi is still unreliable. But I think even our incompetent management understood the need for a new left back. And since we’re most likely also getting a new coach, if I were Théo, I wouldn’t count too much on being a starter next season unless completely changing his attitude, work ethic,…
My random guess is that he and his agent are thinking that they can make more money if he leaves for free since there won’t be a transfer fee to pay, but I don’t know.
We did address it by signing Kerkez….. then signed FBT to play in front of him, then once Kerkez left for nothing and developed into one of the best left-backs in Europe whilst we were paying FBT to not play in the reserves…
But yes, I agree with your overall point.
For a player who “wants to stay”, he is certainly not showing it on the pitch.
Perhaps he and his agent are thinking that they can make more money if he leaves for free since there won’t be a transfer fee to pay.
no teams would negotiate with their players, while behind his back making a deal with another team.
Only ‘Milan’ does it.. is it the same ‘Milan’?? not very proud
hurts milan reputation as well, clown boys 😉
“no teams would negotiate with their players, while behind his back making a deal with another team.”
Oh yes, I’m 100% sure you are right about Milan being absolutely the only team in the world to do that. 🙂
Fantastic news. Thanks Theo! Then thanks to the management who have once again failed to understand that when a player has two seasons remaining you either renew or sell. He should have been extended or sold LAST summer. Now we’re once again in the Kessie/Donnarumma situation. 50% is on the player for being difficult and 50% is on the club for being stupid. F*ck it, let it be, use the sh*t out of him in his final year, run him into the ground in fact, and then move on.
