Longoni: First Chukwueze and now Emerson – Fonseca must use revitalising skills

Samuel Chukwueze has looked very bright during pre-season, following the disappointing 2023-24 campaign, and Paulo Fonseca appears to be onto something. As highlighted by Andrea Longoni, the manager will have to do this with Emerson Royal as well.

Emerson Royal is scheduled to arrive this evening, more specifically around 21:45 CEST, and he will become the third signing of the summer. However, he certainly doesn’t excite the fanbase as much as Alvaro Morata and Strahinja Pavlovic did.

As highlighted by Andrea Longoni in his latest editorial for MilanNews, we have seen promising signs from Chukwueze in pre-season, largely thanks to Fonseca. The manager must now do the same with Emerson Royal, putting his career back on the right path.

“The third signing, Emerson Royal, was greeted by the Rossoneri fans with more scepticism than Morata and Pavlovic. The Brazilian will be playing in a position where, compared to recent years, there is certainly room for improvement, also to raise the general level of the team.

“He didn’t do so well in the Premier League (but Conte respected him), while in La Liga a few years earlier he seemed like a player capable of doing great things. Fonseca will have to be good at revitalising him, just as he seems to be doing with Chukwueze.

“The Nigerian seems different from the decidedly disappointing last season. Caution, because we have only seen a few friendly matches, but if he showed these improvements in official matches too, then Milan could count on ‘a new signing’,” he writes.

The season opener is scheduled for next week but before that, Milan will take on Monza in the Trofeo Silvio Berlusconi. We won’t get to see Emerson Royal then, but some of the other new signings will make an appearance for the Rossoneri.

  1. Chuku came 2 Milan without the pre season and needed about half a season to get into rhythm. Doubt our new boi Emerson will fare any better. Or Pavlo for that matter.
Morata will slide just in tho, he knows the Italian league and what is required of him

  2. Emerson I think is a terrible signing, I really like chukawueze but I don’t like how everyone’s hyping him up because he got goals and assist’s especially during pre season (idk though it seems promising, but looking at his last season it could just be a one time thing he did)

        1. …and i doubt you even watched the Europa Cup too. That said, Chukwueze would do very well this season. Now we are playing what seems like an attacking and possession based football unlike last season where he flourishes.

  3. I watched Villareal. I remember saying to myself that Chukwueze isn’t going to stay long at Villarreal and will be a good winger. I bet even Real and Barça are glad they don’t have to guard him.
Chukwueze’s issue at Milan is 2 fold:
    1. Milan isn’t running their offense with him as a major option as Villarreal did
    2. He has to compete for minutes.

That being said, I like Chukwueze a lot.

  4. Imo, Chukwu didn’t have a terrible season, he only struggled to adapt to the new environment. We all can’t say we didn’t notice him catching up when the season was about to finish

  5. It is hard to judge any player based on the preseason as except for Barcelona we were playing against the B and C team players for the most part.
