Longoni: Hernandez must improve discipline amid suspension against Juve

By Isak Möller -

Theo Hernandez received a yellow card for a rather silly foul against Genoa last night, meaning he will miss the next game against Juventus. The full-back, with all of his experience, must be more disciplined.

The Frenchman arrived late for a challenge and was rightfully carded by the referee shortly thereafter. It was his fight yellow card this season (the first player in Serie A to reach that figure) and he will thus be suspended against Juventus.

As highlighted by Andrea Longoni in his latest editorial for MilanNews, discipline is something that Hernandez must work on moving forward. Most of his cards, in fact, have been for dissent and that is not acceptable.

“It’s a suspension that comes from a stupid yellow card, yet another in this first part of the season, after warnings received for dissent. A silly foul, knowing that he’s a warning from suspension and that the next match is against Juventus. From a player of his experience it is right to expect, from this point of view, a definitive leap in maturity,” he wrote.

It remains to be seen if Stefano Pioli will start Davide Bartesaghi or Alessandro Florenzi on the left against Juventus. The fans provably want to see the youngster but in such an important game, it feels like the veteran is ahead.

  1. Yes he has to improve on his attitude but i really think yesterdays yellow was tactical and with Piolis approval. Tbh, its better to have him sidelined for Juve then Napoli game. That way he will be able to rest and play Psg and Napoli back to back with improved stamina

    1. It wasn’t tactical at all. He body checked the guy. I can see if he is making a tackle to save a potential break from the opposition but he wasn’t and it was just reckless – especially when he was just cautioned by the referee on a similar foul a few minutes before. He wants to be the captain he has to act like it and that means playing smart and being responsible on the pitch. Love Theo but he often gets a pass from the criticism others (like Leao, Krunic etc..) get. Quite frankly IMO Theo hasn’t been playing like one of the best LB’s in the world since the World Cup. He has regressed. He seems more interested in being a tough guy on the pitch than playing football. He used to take over a game with those mesmerizing runs, callable of scoring at any moment. Those are few and far between. Against Geona in the first half without Leao he was invisible and did nothing with Okafor. He plays because we do not have a reliable proven backup. He must be better. Now he missed that crucial game vs Juve. Simply put he must do better and improve his level of play. He has definitely taken steps backwards instead of forward. We need him back to the player he was over a year ago. Time for him to put up or shut up.

      1. How was that tactical haha he ran to the other side of the field and body-checked him after he passed. I swear some people don’t watch the game. We are playing Juventus who’s right behind us in the standings and our only back-up is a teenager.

  2. 100% He needs to work on his discipline. he is picking up stupid yellows for dumb challenges, having to miss games through suspension and putting the team at risk, considering we don’t have natural replacement for his position… Needs to grow up. Having Ibra around for this purpose would be a welcome sight.
