Longoni labels midfielder the ‘most important signing’ for Milan this summer

By Isak Möller -

AC Milan are expected to make multiple reinforcements this summer and after securing Alvaro Morata, work is now underway for Youssouf Fofana and others. As argued by Andrea Longoni, the Frenchman could be the most important signing.

Morata’s arrival was a necessary one following the departure of Olivier Giroud, and a deputy striker could also arrive this summer. One of the main priorities now, however, is the defensive midfield role with advanced talks ongoing with Monaco as we speak.

In his latest editorial for MilanNews, the well-known journalist Andrea Longoni spoke about the latest developments on the mercato. Above all, he labelled the potential arrival of Fofana as the ‘most important signing’ for Milan this summer, given the defensive struggles last season.

“The Frenchman, on paper, could be the most important signing. Not for his price tag, but because he can bring balance to the team and make it run as it should. The Serbian defender seems to have very interesting characteristics: he was chosen to be a starter alongside Tomori.

“For both, it must be said, there is the risk component. The settling-in factor, the leap to a big club, with a heavy shirt and different expectations: obstacles that for example someone like Morata will overcome without problems,” he stated.

It remains to be seen if an agreement will be reached between Mila n and Monaco, but the player has already said yes and the feeling is that this will make the difference.

  1. Longoni as usual got it all wrong. The most important thing was to sign a striker. Which we did. Our midfield, such as it is, somehow managed to play us to second place last season. It is important we get a dm (fofana isn’t a dm) but even if we don’t get anyone, we’re OK, as long as fonseca has brains to score more goals than we concede

    1. Højbjerg can be signed for around 14 if we are fast as Marseille is close to snap him.
With him we will get some experience, leadership and fight in the central midfield until the new generation is ready.

      1. Don’t worry too much FT is on some sort of medication.
Fofana is very important to Milan and if they stuff this target up then the Moncada and Co should back their bags!

He is worth 20mil and Milan should buy him and a striker that can score more than 12 goals per season Jonathan Davies is still available ?

        1. If I was on medication then I would be “normal” wouldn’t I? Not being on medication would make me unstable etc…

I’d say anyone who thinks David would score the same numbers in ita as in fra, needs medication. Overrated striker

We can’t be relying on luck all the time

        1. His is gifted with good stamina. Always running and never looks tired. I guess his talent is at different sport, marathon.

          1. Those young players… They can be poor for 20yo-23yo then just click one day at 24yo and start killing it. That’s kinda when the brain stops developing as well. 24-25 of age. Coincidence?

        2. But knowing the midfield is weak and not doing anything about it is horrible management. We’re basically gonna hope the same guys by luck scrape by… again?
Each season our midfield has gotten weaker and that includes last summer’s binge spending

          1. What they need to do is buy a quality DM. 100%. What they wanna do is buy a b2b and say here is our DM, al our defensive woes are over. They won’t be. You’ll see.

        3. Oh ok my bad. We’re on the same page then. Yes we need a true DM, probably the most important spot after the striker we needed to get this window

      1. “We can’t be relying on luck all the time”.

If having a record setting number of injuries is considered luck then lets hope Inter is as lucky this upcoming season as Milan was last season.

          1. Juventus has been weak for 3,4 years, not just last year.
Napoli had 1 great season. Lazio? 😂😂😂
I guess inter is also lucky because they started winning when Juve fell off the map and in seasons Napoli and the super power Lazio had bad years.
Milan played at least half of the season without their 3 best CB’s.
Bennacer missed half of the season.
Inter had almost no injuries and record numbers of penalties, but Milan had the great luck to finish 2nd because juve, Napoli and Lazio were weak last season?
            I guess so

          2. Many noted how horribly weak serie A last season was (and one of the reasons why inter walked through everyone while they didn’t convince in Europe). Napoli went from first to tenth, Lazio from second to seventh and Juve manage to finish third despite winning only 2 games!!! from march !!
In 2021/22 and 2022/23 the level was much closer and would probably have see us (or inter for that matter) conceide more points.
Were we ravaged by injuries last season ? Sure but that’s nothing new. Every season with Pioli and Osti saw us dealing with a big number of injured players.
So overall I maintain that with a performance like last season, even with a healthy squad, and considering the likelyhood (but not certain) of Napoli and Juve improving, finishing in the top4 won’t be as easy as last season.

    3. Our midfield is still weaker than Inter’s though and if we stand any chance against them in the derbies this season, needs to be improved.

Bringing new midfield pieces is a goo first step, but an important factor is the time it will take to integrate. Inter’s midfield is fully integrated, and firing on all cylinders, and is arguably deeper now with Zielinski joining.

Fonseca has his work cut out for him.

  2. Definitely our worst departments are midfield and defense so we need reinforcements there before anything. Still, we filled the gap left by Giroud first

  3. Amarabat best defensive midfielder is available for peanuts instead of this lackluster fofana. If only there was a Giuntoli managing instead of those rookies we have
