AC Milan are looking to sign a centre-back this summer to make up for the expected departure of Alessio Romagnoli, whose contract is expiring. They might not go for a high-profile name, though.
The likes of Sven Botman and Gleison Bremer have been linked heavily with Milan over the last few weeks. The two, as Andrea Longoni states in his piece for MilanNews, must be considered as Plan A respectively Plan B.
Given the high price tags of both of them, though, Milan could turn to Plan C instead this summer: invest in a young and talented centre-back worth around €10m. Someone who’s physically strong and skilled in aerial duels, but cheaper than the other two.
Paolo Maldini and Ricky Massara could then use the money originally budgeted for the centre-back role elsewhere, such as on Charles De Ketelaere. This is an option that cannot be ruled out, especially given the fierce competition for Botman and Bremer.
This makes the most sense, a young promising CB to grow while Kalulu gets his time in the starting XI while also having the 20 Mil or so extra to invest into De Ketelaere

Exactly. I say Viti of Empoli, right age, very talented and left-footed (something we’re missing). I’d even leave him on loan at Empoli. Use the extra money in the attack. Tomori-Kalulu has earned the start next season. Gabbia out on loan too. Backups: Kjaer, Caldara (underrated, capped by Italy and stayed healthy last season BTW), Duarte.

Completely speculative. Plus all these articles are quotes of other speculative articles. Who knows what’s going to happen or what could have happened. If Investcorp is so wealthy why would then need to finance the purhase? If they’re so wealthy why didn’t they buy a EPL club like the Newcastle owners did? Or why not another big Italian club that could probably be bought at the right price, like Lazio? Or maybe Valencia in Spain, a big club that has been in limbo for years and has an easier path to the CL (less competitive league)? Maldini and Massara are remaining. They have a program that has been successful to date. If Redbird was not going to support that program, why would they stay? People are never satisfied. If Investcorp has bought the club and if they’d spent 60m on Nkunku people would be attacking them for not having spent 100m on Nunez and not being like City or PSG. We win a scudetto and people are behaving like we finished 10th.
Yeah we won the Scudetto with how Maldini and Massara managed the team. Pioli is a great coach. Ill keep staying to how Maldini work this club. People never ever be satisfied, they thought buying star will win them Scudetto, look at Man Utd, they have players but not team work. I rather win like this season, its satisfying. Buying unknown players make them great. Milan are strong.

Those added up to about 70m. I don’t know if you can say the previous majority owner didn’t spend.

Dude, if we have revenues like ManCity or PSG maybe we can do that. Milan’s revenue is barely 300m. We need that closer to 500m before we can talk about having transfer budget bigger than 100m every single season consistently.
As for the central defender : While I’d love to have either Botman or Bremer (Bremer would be better tactically, though I rate Botman as the better defender), I do agree we do have Tomori-Kalulu as our future pairing. So, yes, if we could get someone for 10m, and allocate the 15-20m to let’s say CDK, I’d say go for it.
We don’t need another starter on central defense right now.

Been suggesting this for a while but honestly I think we should just try and also keep Romagnoli and then buy a promising youngster like Viti or Lovato and loan either them or Gabbia. Then we would have Tomori, Kalulu, Romagnoli, Kjaer, and a youngster as our CBs for the season. Sounds good enough to me and very cost effective.
