CM: Maldini determined to see out his €29m bet on Leao – performances proving him right

By Oliver Fisher -

Paolo Maldini was a strong campaigner for Rafael Leao’s stay at Milan and the winger is beginning to repay the faith of the director, a report claims.

Calciomercato.com reports that Leao is a player that Maldini specifically bet on. In his first summer at the head of the Milan technical area he fell in love with the Portuguese forward and convinced owners Elliott Management to spend €29m on him.

Nonetheless, it is a purchase that was perfectly in line with the recruitment conditions dictated by Elliott: young players with high potential who can form part of a future core.

After two seasons of ups and downs and fleeting glimpses of the player he might become, some were convinced that it might be worth selling Leao last summer after his inconsistency lowered his market value.

Not Maldini though. The former captain was always convinced of his choices and is determined to see them out until the end. Leao’s explosion so far this season is a good sign, but the consistency must follow.
