MN: Maldini and Massara thinking of renewal for ‘unique’ and ‘fundamental’ Maignan

By Oliver Fisher -

The AC Milan management are already thinking about the potential renewal of Mike Maignan such is his importance to the club, according to a journalist.

It was back in May 2021 that the news broke of Maignan flying to Italy for a medical with Milan and he signed a five-year contract with the Rossoneri as a replacement for Gianluigi Donnarumma who would eventually go on and join Paris Saint-Germain.

Maignan was given the title of best goalkeeper in Serie A by the league ahead of the last match of the season on 22 May 2022 against Sassuolo, a game in which he racked up his 17th clean sheet of the season and Milan won the title.

Pietro Mazzara wrote about Maignan in his weekly column for MilanNews and outlined just how crucial he is to the way the team play, to the extent that the possible extension of his deadline is being thought about already.

“The return of Mike Maignan has been something of an epic change in the development of the Milan game. It’s not that you don’t lose matches with the French goalkeeper, but it’s also true that he’s capable of making saves that his colleagues around the globe aren’t capable of,” he began.

“His ability to read situations in setting up is fundamental for the Rossoneri’s build-up play and it is no coincidence that there is also much less nervousness around the ball and in the individual elements. A sedative that has restored everyone’s confidence and that the Rossoneri management intends to further lock down.

“His current contract will expire in three years, but his importance is such that Maldini and Massara are already discussing when to address the issue of contractual extension. You don’t want to risk anything, Maignan must be armoured and situations that prolong the issue over time must be avoided.

“The burns have taught us something as the cascading renewals of the past months have shown, but Maignan is another thing. He is unique and must be treated and considered as such. They will talk about it, also because Mike feels at home in Milan and is doing very well.”

    1. Leao doesnt deserve what he wants, way to high with his whole Sporting thing that we dont need to pay. Hé drags it out like Kessie Donnarumma

    2. MM16 deserves more than those two. He was the true MVP of last season as he played well ALL SEASON and not just for the last 2.

  1. Looks like M&M has learned their lesson. Good signs. Renew Super Mike ASAP. He is the key to the performance of our defense.
