Maldini insists ‘Milan are the best club’ for Leao as he discusses three key renewals

By Oliver Fisher -

Paolo Maldini has once again stressed his belief that AC Milan are the best club for Rafael Leao to continue his development.

Before the match against Chelsea, Maldini was interviewed by Prime Video and was asked about the renewals of three players who were a big part of the Scudetto-winning side last season, with MilanNews relaying his comments.

“There is the will to renew him (Leao), Bennacer and Kalulu. The will is there, then of course you have to sit down at the table and negotiate,” he said.

Leao’s situation is one that is attracting particular attention with his current deal set to expire in June 2024. After winning the title of Serie A MVP last season he was the subject of interest from Chelsea during the summer, so the sooner Milan can extend his deal the better.

“For the complete development of Rafa, Milan are the best club, in my opinion. He is 20 years old, I remember that at 20 I didn’t have all these certainties. Each of us has a different path: I remember feeling the pressure, I would need a pat on the back, a word in difficult times. These guys need support.”

Leao was one of the few players who could emerge from the 3-0 defeat to Chelsea with his head held high as he caused some problems in the first half with darting runs on the left.
