GdS: A Maldini will be Milan’s opponent – it has not happened since 1967

By Oliver Fisher -

A Maldini will be an opponent of Milan for the first time in over 50 years tonight at San Siro as Daniel arrives with Spezia to face his parent club.

Today’s edition of La Gazzetta dello Sport (via PianetaMilan) speaks of Milan-Spezia as some ‘family business’ because tonight Daniel Maldini will return to San Siro as an opponent after winning the Scudetto with his boyhood club and the club of his family.

However, he will not be the first from the dynasty to play against the Rossoneri as back in 1967 Cesare Maldini turned out for Torino against Milan, and that is the only time in history it has happened.

There will be an added element to tonight’s game given his father Paolo will watch the game from the stands and it might well be that for the first time he is hoping his son does not score a goal.

Football has already seen some father versus son games such Bruno Conti against Daniele and Pierpaolo Bisoli against Dimitri. Cesare Maldini spoke to Mauro Bianchessi – then head of the Milan youth sector – about his grandson Daniel as follows: “He plays at Lombardia 1 and he’s really good.” He will be looking down tonight.

  1. Cesare Maldini played for triestina in 53-54 season and played 31 of of 34 games so it would seem like he met us before he joined us as well but of course that predates the maldini dynasty.
I was pretty sure that christian maldini also had played a friendly match against us but it seems i might remember wrong on that account,

      1. Thanks for the clarification Jerekre, I thought so too but then i was confused if we actually had played them or pro vercelli where he was never a player and i thereby had mixed up things,
