AC Milans Italian technical director Paolo Maldini

Maldini responds after being asked about trust in Pioli: “A question I was hoping not to hear”

AC Milan director Paolo Maldini spoke in front of the cameras last night after the team lost 4-0 against Lazio to essentially put any whispers of a Scudetto challenge to bed.

Milan needed a response at the Stadio Olimpico last night having thrown away a lead against Roma, lost in the Coppa Italia against Torino, drawn against Lecce and lost against Inter in the Supercoppa in the last four games, but it did not come.

Lazio swept the Rossoneri aside as Sergej Milinkovic-Savic and Mattia Zaccagni each scored in the first half to open up a two goal lead, with a penalty from Luis Alberto and a fourth from Felipe Anderson condemning Pioli’s men to another dismal loss

Maldini spoke to Sky Italia at the end of the game to reflect on Milan’s recent difficulties and as part of the interview he was also asked about his confidence in Stefano Pioli, with his comments relayed by MilanNews.

On the moment: “A delicate moment, it also happens that we are second. It doesn’t seem like a big disaster to me, we’re in the round of 16 of the Champions League and we didn’t succeed last year.”

Are you worried about the recent results? “They don’t worry me, we dominated against Roma and they undeservedly got a draw. It is very clear that from a technical, tactical and psychological point of view it is not our best moment.”

Is trust in Pioli confirmed? “That’s a question I was hoping not to hear. I have to answer yes, after what I told you and this question was asked sincerely…”

How do you get out of this situation? “We are second, I remind you. After 7 years the team qualified for the Champions League two years ago, won the Scudetto last year deservedly, and is now second. I understand the criticism, but I would look at the facts. The facts say that the team aren’t playing well, they are not in a great psycho-physical condition, but they are there.”

On the market: “Teams want to strengthen themselves, but we won’t budge from our ideas of recent years. Don’t expect signings like English teams or some Italian teams.”

Will you talk to Pioli? “We talk every day, we have the opportunity to talk before and after training. We are disappointed, we have lost the chance to get to 2 of the 4 competitions we could have reached. Napoli are having a fantastic season, if they score another 50 points no one will take away the Scudetto.”
