Marotta confirms Leao could have joined Inter and admits surprise over first leg win

By Oliver Fisher -

Inter director Beppe Marotta has revealed that Rafael Leao could have ended up joining them instead of AC Milan, and also admitted he is surprised to be 2-0 up in the Champions League semi-finals.

Marotta was a guest speak at the Milano Football Week event organised by La Gazzetta dello Sport and discussed a number of topics, starting with Wednesday night’s first leg win over Milan at San Siro.

The most recent result certainly left him feeling pleased, beating Milan 2-0 in the first leg of the Champions League semi-final at San Siro, and even Marotta admits that was better than expected.

“We have an advantage, but must also read the moment and be humble and motivated as well as have belief we can achieve something important,” he said (via Football Italia).

“We mustn’t rest on our laurels, experience teaches me things can change rapidly. We could’ve won 3-0, but then Sandro Tonali hit the woodwork, so the important thing is the performance. To be honest, I never would’ve imagined a 2-0 lead.”

Marotta was also asked about a rumour regarding Rafael Leao, namely one that he could have ended up joining the blue side of the city rather than the red side when he moved from Lille in the summer of 2019.

“Yes, I can confirm it. But then we made different choices.”

Leao instead became a star for the Rossoneri and, according to widespread reports, he has agreed a contract extension until 2028 which will be signed after the second leg next week, hopefully after a comeback against the city rivals.
