Massara insists Milan are ‘confident’ on Leao’s renewal and brands Tomori a ‘pillar’ of the side

By Oliver Fisher -

AC Milan director Ricky Massara has insisted that the club are feeling ‘confident’ regarding the renewal of Rafael Leao as he also spoke about the signing of Fikayo Tomori.

The work of Massara since his arrival at the club as the sporting director has been a big part of the recent success that Milan have had, a path that culminated with the Scudetto win last season that ended an 11-year drought. The former Roma man is tipped for identifying and helping negotiate the arrival of several young talents, along with Paolo Maldini of course.

Massara was present at the Gran Galà del Calcio awards for 2022 and he was interviewed by Sky, with his comments relayed by MilanNews.

On the signing of Tomori: “This trend is changing a bit, young and strong players are coming from the Premier League. Tomori is one of the pillars of this team, we are happy to have him with us.”

On Leao: “There is also a great work of the coach and his staff, which have made many young players grow, including Leao who has done extraordinary things. We are happy to have such a high level of staff.”

Milan face a battle to hang on to Leao after a season in which he was named the Serie A MVP and he managed to rack up double figures in goals and assists across all competitions, attracting the interest of some of Europe’s top clubs.

Leao’s contract expires in June 2024 so there is the necessity to find an agreement one way or another one what the future holds given that next summer he will be a year away from the expiry of his contract.

On Leao’s renewal, Massara added: “We are confident, we want to consolidate this growth and stabilise the team’s competitiveness. We will try to find a solution to continue with Leao for a long time. His father is here tonight, so we will have the opportunity to talk already at dinner (smiles).”
