Mayor Sala agrees with Milan and Inter on stadium concerns: “It’s time to accelerate”

By Oliver Fisher -

The Mayor of Milan Beppe Sala has admitted that it is right for AC Milan and Inter to ask for clarifications and to expect an acceleration in the new stadium project.

It was back in 2019 that the two clubs officially announced their plans to construct a new state of the art home that would be shared by the Rossoneri and the Nerazzurri next to the existing San Siro, which is closing in on being 100 years old.

However, Milan and Inter ran into various bureaucratic delays during the process with so many layers of approval to get through, which has led to widespread rumours that the two managements are now evaluating their own projects outside the city limits.

Now, Sala has responded to the Milan and Inter leadership after they submitted a joint note asking for various reassurances, which can be read here.

“In mid-April, following the conclusion of the Public Debate, we asked Milan and Inter for an update of the economic and financial plan relating to the new stadium project,” Sala began (via Calciomercato.com).

“Today we received a joint note from the teams in which they request:

  • To extend the deadlines for the revision of the project dossier;
  • To clarify any constraints on the existing stadium and on the rumoured hypothesis of a city referendum.

“And I can only fully understand their reasons. The request for a referendum to be held for the maintenance of San Siro (not envisaged in the project) was initially rejected by the Board of Trustees, appointed by the City Council, but then called into question by the Tar; now a new pronouncement from the College itself is awaited.

“A definitive word is still missing on the constraint that could be placed by the Superintendency. It is entirely reasonable that in this context, Milan and Inter express reservations about investing time and money in the project.

“So I offered them my support to organise a meeting shortly with the Superintendency and one with the Board of Trustees.
In recent years, the Council has taken all the necessary steps, with transparency and in compliance with the rules. I think it’s time to accelerate.”
