Mayor Sala jokes about Milan after giving Inter award: “They have three years”

By Oliver Fisher -

Mayor Beppe Sala has joked that AC Milan have three years to try and win the Scudetto so that he can congratulate them for winning a second star as he did Inter.

Inter won 2-0 against Torino in the early kick-off yesterday and then there was an open top bus parade from the stadium to the city centre to celebrate their 20th title, one which has drawn controversy.

Sala, who is a well known Inter fan, spoke at an event marking the death of the student Sergio Ramelli 49 years on, with his comments relayed by MilanNews.

“Yesterday there was concern for so many people in the Piazza for the celebration of Inter, but we have a Prefecture and a Police Headquarters that work very well here in Milan, we saw on April 25th, I was there, while yesterday I was at home. The parade wasn’t easy either, there were delicate moments but they worked extremely well,” he said.

“Milan? They have three years, if they hurry a little, I can be the mayor who gives the Ambrogino twice for the second star.”

Sala is referring to the fact that his last term as the Mayor of the city will end in 2027, so Milan would have to win the league title by the end of the 2026-27 season for him to present the award.

The Ambrogino d’oro is the name by which the honours conferred by the Council of Milan are commonly called. The name is inspired by Sant’Ambrogio, patron saint of the city.

Given the difficulties that the Sala administration have provided in Milan’s attempts to build their own new stadium, the club might rather it be someone else who commemorates that second star when it does arrive.
