AC Milan chose to bring forward an investment in Santiago Gimenez that was planned for the summer transfer window, but in doing so they might have made a big saving.
Gimenez arrived towards the end of the winter mercato, signing a deal that will run until 2029, and he made his debut for the club during the 3-1 Coppa Italia win over Roma, setting up Joao Felix – a fellow January arrival – for the third goal.
Then, he made his Serie A debut during Saturday’s 2-0 win over Empoli and got his first goal for the club in the process. After collecting a pass from Christian Pulisic following great hold-up play, the Mexican cut inside on his left foot and curled a brilliant shot past Milan loanee Devis Vasquez.
Speaking in his column for MilanNews, Pietro Mazzara has revealed that the Rossoneri might have had to pay quite a bit more for Gimenez in the summer had they not got a deal done in the winter.
“Santiago Gimenez is what Milan has needed for years, even during the reign of Giroud and Ibrahimovic. ‘El Bebote’ is one of those strikers who are hungry for goals, who like to go to physical confrontation and who are not afraid of anything or anyone,” he said.
“The first masterpiece came on Saturday against Empoli, with a goal that was beautiful for its stylistic figure and the impactful power of the marking, because not only was it the point of 0-2, but it was a real calling card to Serie A.
“The other work was done before, namely in the negotiation that took place with Feyenoord, conducted by Giorgio Furlani for Milan and by Rafaela Pimenta on the player’s side. Gimenez arrived for €28.5m plus bonuses that can bring the overall figure of the operation to a maximum of €35m.
“[It is] A deal that had to be done also because trying to take him in the summer, probably, would have cost about €20m more. Investing in quality, as done with Joao Felix, often pays off the money spent and Milan absolutely needed it.”
Furlani looking to save his own arse…😂
can you please, once in a while post a story that is based on facts rather than some random imagination of a journalist.
It is based on facts. The article is about Mazzara and his opinion of Gimenez. He really said that, fact. 😀
yeah papers should always post that Milan sucks, Maldini was right, thats the only ‘truth’ you people want to hear
Lmao. If it was up to you, we would still have De Sciglio.
No no, Gyokeres and Sesko cost 20m more. It’s the very reason we “ended up” with Giminez so to speak. Best available striker at a low enough price that even though we went over budget wasn’t too much over budget. The risk an.alysis would make sense for this one. Part of it I would as.sume it opens another part of the north american market which they’re keen on. All that’s missing is a Canadian to complete the trifecta…..hmmm 🤔
Sesko and Gyökeres are 50M more at minimum. They will go for 90M+
What are you talking about? Gyokeres costs x3, not 20M more. They are asking close to 100M, not 50M. And he is 26, still only proved that he can score in Portugal. Big risk to pay close to 100M for a 27 year old (will be in a few months) that might fail against top defenders. I would rather have Gimenez for under 35M, than Gyokeres for 80M. Really simple.
I’m with Igor on this one. Gyokeres is too risky and we have financial realities to deal with.
And Sekso is good but he scores about the same as Morata, under 20 goals per season. And he is quite selfish, so he wastes a lot since he scores only 15-20 goals per season…
You are the master of twisting facts, Gyokeres costs over 60m and that has to be paid in 1 installment not the 4 we are doing with Gimenez, is that too hard for you to understand?
What is this fascination with Gyokeres? The Portuguese league isnt magically 10 times better than the Dutch league and he is also much older
But i know people like you only look at transfer amount and not the player themselves like all the dumb City fans praising 60m signing of a average player like Nico Gonzalez
Look who’s talking about master of twisting facts …the master himself. Never said I preferred Gyokeres or Sesko. Read again. It about perception in quality reflected in prices
its about you not being able to process the fact that Serie A clubs dont do 100m signings
Gyokeres isn’t proven outside of his league and is already 27. Sesko has an inferior goal scoring record. You’re out of your mind. Gimenez is better than Sesko.
The article isn’t referring to his current value in this transfer window.
The article is saying he would have cost 20m more if we had waited till the summer to sign him. I also want to add that he could easily have appreciated by more than the 20m quoted, hence making him beyond our reach.
We saved money by concluding the deal in this window.
I was actually surprised Ferenoyd will sell in this winter transfer. Now, with the sacking of their coach, everything is beginning to make sense.
I think there’s a management crisis at the club and Gimenez took advantage with an exit.
I think u guys missed the point of the +20m
which wasn’t intended to be exacting but just merely the fact that those strikers cost a certain quantum more than Giminez and thus there’s a perceived difference in quality which we aren’t prepared to pay for
Exactly – he was the cheapest option lol
ANS had we signed him LAST summer he would have been LESS money than now. Pointless article.
