Milan’s big-defeat tendency under Pioli’s management outlined – full list

Since the 3-0 defeat against Paris Saint-Germain last night, there has been a lot of talk on social media about AC Milan’s big-defeat tendency under Stefano Pioli. So we decided to take a look at the statistics.

As we have seen above all in the derbies against Inter, Milan have sometimes struggled to keep morale up after conceding the first goal, resulting in big defeats. Rossoneri fans on social media have criticised Pioli on that front, highlighting that there have been many since he took over.

Taking at the last four seasons, including the 2019-20 season as Pioli joined in October, there have been a total of 13 big defeats (three goals or more). One that all Milan fans remember, aside from the derbies, is the 5-0 defeat against Atalanta.

  1. Some big portion if the blame goes to Pioli no doubt.
He has done things that are hard to explain.

I would also like to see his points average against the small team games. It was an area were say under Ancelotti we weren’t great at considering we had a top 3 team in the world almot at all times, while Juve ate the minions for lunch. All games are worth the same in a league, and with this in mind Pioli’s points per game are remarkable. If not for this, wed be in the bottom part of Serie A while we are 2nd behind by only 1 point.

    1. True re Ancelotti, and it was something that infuriated me during his time. The squad we had 2002-2006 was, in my opinion, the strongest Milan squad of all time. While Ancelotti was good in the CL, he only brough 1 scudetto home in his 8 years with the club. It’s a real shame.

      Dida,
      Cafu, Stam, Nesta, Maldini
      Gattuso, Pirlo, Seedorf
      Kaka
      Inzaghi, Shevchenko

Some of the bench: Abbiati, Costacurta, Kaladze, Ambrosini, Crespo, Tomasson

      Mamma mia che scuadra!

        1. A mere shadow … way way exaggerating here bro.

Gulliet and Rijkaard were top top top players, but Kaka and Pirlo were universally recognized as the best in their positions at the time. Van Basten better than Sheva? Maybe, but the numbers didn’t show it. And Stam and Nesta in that one season were probably one of the best CB pairings of all time. And we haven’t gotten to Seedorf and Cafu yet, not to mention Maldini who was a more complete player in the 2000s.

I would say the later squad was slightly better, though both are widely considered two of the best football squads of all time.

        2. Only in terms of success, but absolutely not in terms of star power and quality. 2000s team underachieved but they were every bit as good as the late 80s/early 90s team. Better in some places, worse in others.

          1. As i said in my reply to Baresis Dream i obviously recognize that those were great teams as well but i nevertheless stand by what i said.

  2. remember to be nice good call hahaha

the opponents is what makes it the more painful as a fan.
    Inter the worst.

To loose to Atalanta as often, although a well managed club that has a lot of big scalps, should not be this frequent. Especially the 0s on the scoreboard.

  3. I think this data should not be put alone but rather in conjecture with other statistics, like, how many big defeats did Milan had before pioli ? how many per coach ? how this defeat affected what comes next ?

    1. I think this data should not be put alone but rather in conjecture with other statistics, like, how many big defeats did Milan had before pioli ? how many per coach?

      Seconded

    2. Pioli had better teams compared to the previous coaches in recent memory and many of these losses should not have happened.

To be fair, on the other side of it, we have to also point to how many games we had no business winning, against teams with more resources or that were stronger those seasons yet we came out on top. That would be an interesting article to see as well.

  4. Attention shouldn’t be shifted to how many points we pick up against small or big teams or not as compared to vintage Milan.
The issue is we tend to lose scandalously too often under Pioli

  5. Milan has a strong foundation to build on and we a few more additions and a coach with a good tactical flexibility this team can reach top levels to compete with the like of Inter and PSG.

For me there are few things that needs to be addressed:

#1 Another player exodus. Kjaer, Kalulu, Florenzi, Pobega, Jovic, Giroud and Krunic ALL needs to go.

#2 Another team upgrade is needed. I would dare to say sell Leao to the highest bidder. We already have Pulisic who is better on the left wing and would easily replace Leao. If we can get 100m or more for Leao we should take it. That money can be used to upgrade the team.

#3. New hungry young players between 23-27 to strengthen the team. Milan needs 2 quality CFs like Guirassy and Giminez. Guirassy release clause is 17m and we can get Giminez for 25-30m. That’s less than 50m for 2 top proven strikers. Okafor should be our 3rd striker option. Inter has 4 quality strikers who can make a difference in the team. Milan needs that level of depth in quality to compete.

#4. Coaching change. If Pioli fails to win a trophy we should part ways. There are a few good cheap options available next season. Francesco Farioli of Nice and Arne Slot of Feyenoord are good options. Pioli time is up if we don’t win anything this season.

#5. Fix the medical staff. Milan players are having too many muscular issues. This medical staff sucks.

    1. Strong foundation yet you basically suggest to do turn over for half of the team and also the coach. It says much, doesn’t it.

  6. So if we fail to achieve goals this season, does it mean Furlani and Moncada are out? I mean Maldini and Massara achieved more than it was expected so…

  7. Managing a big club like ac milan is not an easy task, its not as simple as firing directors and replacing them with others, its not as easy as firing a certain coach and replace him with another, its not as easy as selling a certain player and buying another, winning a scudetto, ucl semi’s, those are not easy feats, keeping books in green in serie a is an impossible task, bringing up super stars is not easy, many talented players fail, many things can go wrong, sometimes they can go your way, learn to appreciate the work of the team when they are achieving good results, also appreciate how the other teams are working when they are winning, learn to enjoy wins coz when defeats come, its bad, nobody knows tomorrow, nobody knows how the season will go, when things go bad, its everyone’s fault not only the people that you dont like, when things are fine, credit to everyone not only the people that you like, currently milan is far far behind in europe, and at this rate we will be in pot 3 or 4 of every ucl draw for most seasons, hope things will work out in some way

  8. I agree with the guy who said to sell Leao. Get someone like Di Marco over there. Pioli out! Two new strikers who are PROVEN. Not losers like Jovic (???) How did he get in there. Or inconsistent like Giroud. I would sell Theo too. Let’s face it , he’s lazy. Why does Milan have all these guys with talent who are lazy? (Leao, Theo, present day Kjaer,) Pobega hasn’t worked either btw.

  9. As much as I respect Pioli, he is a bit too nice for the squad. Constantly defending players even if they 10:0 is not good for long term. We can beat average teams but we can’t beat big clubs now. Because there is no discipline. Leao can do whatever he wants and he won’t be subbed. The same goes to Tomori Theo and thiaw. We need a coach who can bench anyone when there is no performance

    1. at first i agree with him when in match they play good, but after a series of match we lose but pioli still saying we play good football for 60 minutes etc it really make him like a clown

  10. You don´t want to look at the negative highlights of results of Klopp´s Liverpool.
There is really no point to posts like that apart from seeding venom.

  11. Im getting more and more fed up with pioli. Giroud hasnt scored in 9 games club and country and leao is about the same but they start. Ten men against juve and leao still just strolls about. Fck sake!. Pioli takes off pulisic… I dont know why okafor hasnt started recently.maybe he said something to pioli to offend him. Psg game i switched over to the celtic game instead after the first half. Yeah it was an away game. But a must win. Our offensive free kicks/corners have been awful throughout the years of pioli. Florenzi aint bad at free kicks. But does he not focus any of this in training will the the players. Hernandez especially loves to fall over all the time so we should at least take advantage of him falling over after every run. The opposition probably have a sigh of relief when milan get free kicks. Nice that’ll be a by kick. Sell leao please. We can do better with the money. No idea who you get in as a manager though

    1. I thought I was the only one who noticed this free kick deficiency. When we signed tonali from Brescia I was very excited for our set pieces. He even scored one direct free kick for us… All of a sudden pioli switched free kick takers to the likes of Giroud, Krunic, Theo… Tonalis dead ball abilities wavered under pioli, and the man has only gotten worse. Tomori taking a direct free kick in the UCL.. you what a joke

    2. Corners have been up and down a little bit, we do produce good ones from time to time.

Free kicks are pretty dead in general, it isn’t the 00s anymore. There are new techniques to defend them like the laying player+jumping wall and the importance has gone down together with longshots.

  12. See what I’m suggesting is that Acmilan should sign two midfielder no8 and no 10 attacking midfield then a striker and stop using tomori and thiaw used kalulu and Kjaer

  13. Pioli, continue 100% depending on Rafael Leao and we will see many more defeats like that. Leao is a flash in the pan. Like Seedorf said, Mbappe is a REAL player. Leao just tries to have fun. Fun doesn’t win you games. We should play Okafor in his place. Leao is only for show, no result.

  14. Now see who’s having the last laugh! I thought all you Pioli fan would support him come sun and rain! Why the sudden change in tune and all these ceaseless lamentation! Are you all just getting to know that this coach is a scam…haven’t you all seen his previous Management records that he was always fired! Florentina, Lazio, inter….I wonder why the visionless management will handover a team to a mediocre coach! I will keep saying it anywhere without the charisma of Zlatan Ibrahimovic, pioli can never ever win a trophy! Go and check his track record bot even a single achievement! What a scam

  15. It’s very unfortunate for a club like Milan to be conceding unnecessary goals in big matches which we are supposed to be in n control, pioli should please stop playing krunic as our number 6 cos he doesn’t know what to do with the ball whenever the ball is in his position.

  17. What is this absolute nonsense of an article?

The one thing that stands out from Pioli’s time at Milan (other than the small matter of the Scudetto) is he’s won the big matches!

He managed to turn the tide on Juve!

He’s had 4 wins against Juve and 4 draws including scoring 4 goals against Juve for the first time since 1989.

That 4:2 figure set us on a path where we went from MID-TABLE to TITLE WINNING form for TWO years which included a SCUDETTO.

Even the list above is pathetic:

    – you managed to find one result in 19/20 – right at the start and at our lowest point?

    – 4 in 20/21

    – 1 in 21/22

    – 5 in 22/23

    – 2 this season?

    Really?

And could you please make your minds up!

If this Milan are the worst team to have ever won Scudetto and it was all one big fluke…then these results are entirely consistent with that world view.

An article like this makes want to stop reading this site. Absolutely disgraceful.

    1. Go, then, you won’t be missed. Bye. All that will be remembered is your fawning and pathetic defense of this mediocre coach, nothing more.

      1. Pioli is 1/4 Scudetto winning managers in Serie A.

So unless we (re)hire one of those, what’s the guarantee that his replacement will win us the Scudetto?

Do actual achievements not count in football any more?

Is it more about what people like to imagine some randomer might achieve?

  18. Pioli is good enough for Serie A as are our players but outside of that we just aren’t ready for Europe.

Neymar leaves in the summer and PSG will come calling for Leao and we SHOULD sell and upgrade/elevate the team more to be relevant in Europe. We have wingers already to cover Leao. We need more quality CF’s, better RB options, relevant LB backup and higher quality midfield.

REIJNDERS and Musah will get better with time. RLC is transitional and if he stays healthy is a great piece. Bennacer coming back will be good but we’ll need a deeper bench.

Having said that, with this current team we should be able to stay Top4 domestically and secure Europe every year. But eventually we need an upgrade in Pioli.

    1. The reason we’re ready for Europe is because we keep chopping and changing.

      Our European counterparts less so.

Newcastle only signed 4 players this summer after they broke into the top 4.

We finished top 4 and broke up the squad….

      1. This point you’re always trying to make is not valid, as the PSG team that decimated us on Wednesday had only 4 starters from the previous season with a new coach. Milan had 7 previous starters and same coach for years. We ought to be sturdier using your analysis innit?

        1. Yes PSG are one of the worst managed clubs in Europe which is why with all their money they struggle to even win the French league and got hammered by Newcastle.

But even they have Mbappé who has been there 6 years and Marquinhos who has been there 10.

Nearly every team in the Champions League has players like this – players who have played at the club for 5-10 years.

Modric has been at Real for 11 years
De Bruyne at Man City for 8 years
Neuer at Bayern for 12 years..

and so on and so forth.

We are YEARS behind these other teams because we keep pressing the reset button.

We just can’t stop fiddling with the squad. We’ve dismantled a Scudetto winning squad in less than 2 years.

  19. As much as I do like Pioli, his tactics are way too predictable in the big games. He also relies too much on Leao. If he doesn’t improve on the way he manages, he will be the first to leave, despite the good job he’s done over the years. He needs to improve the way the midfield plays. We can’t keep playing without purpose every time one or two players are injured, or we get a red card in a game. He also needs to talk to Leao about the need to pass the ball to his teammates when they are in better positions to get the goal. Teamwork will give us the desired result, not individual glory. Leao needs to have this in his head.

  20. Milan scoring only 3 goals in their last UCL matches is a lot to say about pioli and his inability. His lack of tactics and always confuse. Milan is no longer a team that equalize and win a match from behind because when ever he’s a goal down at 60s minutes he make stupid sub that totally drain the game immediately

    Pioli out.
