GdS: Milan thank Chelsea for Giroud – the numbers of his best start in nine years

By Oliver Fisher -

Olivier Giroud has had a brilliant start to the season with AC Milan and he returns to Italy having scored for France over the international break too.

La Gazzetta dello Sport (via MilanNews) writes how on Saturday evening in Empoli, Milan will resume Scudetto defence at the Stadio Carlo Castellani and Giroud will once again lead the attack.

This is in large part because Zlatan Ibrahimovic will return in January, while Divock Origi and Ante Rebic are on the road to recovery, but it is not yet known whether they will be available to Pioli for the trip to Tuscany.

For this reason it will be up to the Frenchman again, and he will make his 10th start in 2022-23 when factoring in club and international football. The last team he had so many was in the 2013-14 season when he played for Arsenal and started 11 out of 11 games.

He amassed 5 goals in that period with the Gunners, while at present Giroud is on 9 starts out of 11 matches, with 735 minutes accumulated and 6 goals scored. Giroud has played in each Milan game since 11 December 2021 against Udinese, which is 34 appearances in a row and 28 starts.

These are incredible numbers, especially if you consider that the former Chelsea man will turn 36 in two days, but at the same time it is important that alternative options are available so he is not overworked and risks injury.
