Milan coach Pioli feels ‘okay’ with his options on the right wing

By Euan Burns -

AC Milan coach Stefano Pioli has said that he feels ‘okay’ with his options on the right ring this season following the win over Bologna on Saturday night.

Speaking to Sky Sport Italia after the match, as was reported by Milan News, Pioli discussed an area of the squad that many have felt needs to be upgraded this summer.

Milan were linked for a very long time with Chelsea winger Hakim Ziyech to come in and bring more quality to the right side of Milan’s attack.

It now seems highly unlikely that a new attacker will be joining given Pioli has said that he is content with having Alexis Saelemaekers and Junior Messias rotating in that position.

“I’m delighted with Messias and Saelemaekers. We have our own balances that require the winger to try to be dangerous but do a dirty job. Always be balanced, on the right I feel okay with the players I have,” Pioli said.

The fact that Charles De Ketelaere could play on the right if it were needed is likely part of why Milan have decided to focus on a new defender and midfielder in the final days of the window.

  1. What that means is Pioli has been told he’s not getting a right winger….

I still think our lack of RW and a young prolific striker will be our u doing this year

    1. A st shouldn’t be a problem with Giroud and Origi who should almost constantly be available, what worries me is that RW, Saele seems a bit better this year but still not up to par while Messias is nonexistent

    2. Our budget only 50m euro while we need to buy CB,DMF,AMF . We dont have budget to buy striker or high profile RW, free transfer striker like belotti are not interesting too

  2. Knowing the problem and ignoring it. none of those two are good enough for Milan. Expect nothing from that side basically.

  3. What worries me is that everyone is assuming Origi is going to get 20 goals. There’s literally nothing to suggest that. He may do and if he does great but he is a gamble. I’ve said it before, he’s 27 and should be in his prime, but klopp saw fit to bring in Nunez and Jota rather than promote Origi….I think Giroud is one of the most underrated players of the last 10-15 years but he’s still not that prolific

    1. Yes I think you are probably right, may depend on CL progress too.

Despite all the Belotti haters I’d feel so much more comfortable with him over Origi

      1. Agree on the rw.

Origi hasn’t even play more than 30 minutes. Give the man a break and trust management. Look our squad today, tonali, kaluku, tomori, leao, cdk, bennacer, theo, maignan etc. They saw something in Origi that can fit in our squad. Trust

        1. He’s been under one of the worlds best managers for 5 years and he’s seen nothing in him to warrant first team football. Origi was an attractive option because he was free, dot yo tho k we’d have signed him if there’s was a 20m price tag? I hope Origi proves me wrong, but I just don’t think he will.

My judgement of Origi isn’t based on 30 mins at Milan it’s based on 5 years at Liverpool. I don’t doubt Origi is a good player, he’s fast and strong and scored some key goals, but what we need is. 20 goal a season man….I’m not sue what origi is other than a good forward player. He’s a bit like Rashford, is he a wide player or a CF…? never consistent in either role…..

  4. Unfortunately our Right wingers are not ‘dangerous’. The dirty work they can do, probably one of the best. But that most important dangerous part is severely lacking😭If we have to settle I really think Salamaekers should be our option cause Junior hasn’t offered anything the first 3 games, let’s see Alexis has maybe improved.

  5. The ‘end product’ is the main problem with our RWs, in fact a serious weakness. They can do the dirty job, yes, and I hope that Saelemaekers can do a much needed leap of quality this season. But anyway, its something that we can fix in the winter. The ACM question was finally resolved and I guess we’re good in terms of attacking options upfront.

  6. Shame of Milan, on this transfer market. They couldnt spent 50 milion for reinforcement after many years.
Reinforcement from 5 to 10 milion… Hahaha. Ex Europian champion. Level 2nd greek ligue.

  7. I think it’s worth looking at Florenzi or Brahmin for the RW…it’s shameful that given our weakness there last season, as champions we haven’t addressed it..we have no RW and Adli will probably spend most the season benched…strategy not been great

    1. Brahim can’t play on the right side in the current 4231 set up. If Milan was playing 433 maybe he can fit there but not in 4231.
Everyone is obsessed and only thinks about the attacking aspect of our RWers but neglect the work they do on the defensive side. Brahim can’t do what messias & especially Saelemakers do tracking back. He will leave Calabria exposed just like Suso used to do.
Yes we need more goals from the right side , but their defensive work allows our left side more freedom attacking. It all balances itself out.
IMO Pioli needs to stop playing and go back to starting Saelemakers.

      1. It’s just put out from the right, not just goals…I don’t buy this BS that a player can’t defend…if you’re paid 100k per week to kick a ball around you can learn to fucking well track back and do a defensive job…..

We are running out of options

        1. 🤣🤣🤣
Yeah but it isn’t just a question of will. Brahim Diaz has some major physical limitations. You’ve seen how easy opposing players get him on the ground. All it takes is a little shove, nudge or a bump. Brahim is a No-No for the right side.
Even when Hakan was still at Milan, Pioli would play both of them together and Brahim was always the 10 and Hakan was either on the right or on the left

          1. Don’t buy it, look at Pedro for Barca, Henry went to Barca and learnt how to track back and out a shift in on the wing, Pep wouldn’t play them otherwise. , Dennis Wise was small but defensively defiant… Defending isn’t just about being a physical presence, it’s about positioning, reading the game, intelligence. The reason Brahmin is easily bullied in the centre of the park is because that’s where the big CBS and DMs are. Out wide he’d be free of that to a degree

As Maldini once said, if I have to make a tackle I’ve already made an error…it’s a far from perfect solution but by Xmas well all be fed up with Messias and Alexis

          2. I get it but it’s not a fair comparison.
Henry and Pedro played for Barca as wingers in 433 and Barca was basically defending by dominating possession.
Yes Wise was small so is Bennacer, but those guys have been trained most of their careers to play that game.
Brahim is a finesse, attacking player. He wasn’t trained to defend. We all know that most finesse, creative players are allowed freedom by their coaches and their teammates cover for them defensively.
Milans DM’s and defense already has to cover for Leao, you can’t ask them to do the same for the other wing as well

    2. Milan don’t have RW that is true, Saelemakers is RWB/RM while Messias is AM. Even Leao is actually SS, not LW.

But this is just how Piolisimo work. Pioli doesn’t use true winger because even though on paper it is written as 4-2-3-1, the reality on the pitch is very fluid. Pioli called it as “Open Winger”.

  8. Maldini must have been watching a different game from me just think if we had someone decent on that right hand side messiah and salemakers are not good enough. Why not try dck there it’s worth e try to see what he is like in that position.

  9. I’m sorry @Vardar don’t wish to labour the point, but that simply isn’t the case. Why did Barca dominate possession? Because they won the ball back quickly high up the pitch, the press starts with the forwards, they achieve this through physically small ‘flair’players like Messi, Pedro, Sanchez, Suarez. If you watch the ‘Play the ball, Pass the ball’ documentary you’ll see Henry say that he was once substituted at half time when he scored for the sheer fact that he left his positional duties. Henry couldn’t believe it he though scoring would be the right thing to do but Pep saw he’d left the shape of the teamz you don’t need to be physically imposing to hassle, harass, and run, to leave the defenders with no time to think..I refuse to whence that with the right influences a player can’t do these things. Henry himself has said he has to relearn the game under Pep…he couldn’t be the player he was at Arsenal…

    1. I think we just have a different opinions on the matter.
Barca as well as the other Pep clubs Bayern and City dominate possession because majority of their players were/are skilled and comfortable on the ball with great first touch.
That’s how Ancelotti’s Milan was with Pirlo, Seedorf, Rui Costa, later Kaka.
This current Milan outside of Bennacer doesn’t have that.
Barca in possession was able to hide the ball, put you to sleep and after 50 passes create a shot.
      Yes they pressed high.
Milan also presses high but once they recover the ball everyone just goes 100mph, quick 2,3 passes that usually end up with a turnover, leaving the team susceptible to a counter attack

      1. My main point is that a small flair player can press and ‘defend’ if required, and Henry at 29 or whatever he was was able to relearn the game.

Ancelotti’s Milan was very vulnerable as Liverpool exploited in 2005. The three in midfield with Pirlo as the Pivot often got over run and exposed. The formation was narrow and we got found out many times by Dortmund, Deportivo and Ajax, luckily the sheer talent won over more times than not. We should have been CL champions in 2004 and 2005 though in my opinion.

But yes our opinions differ. We can however agree the RW is shite 😂

        1. Absolutely the 2004 and 2005 teams were way better than ’03 & ’07.
But gave up a 4-1 first leg lead vs La Coruna in 04, and that nightmare in ’05. In ’06 referee helped Barca in the semis by disallowing a clear Sheva goal.
I love Carlo but I still think he and those 2000s Milan teams vastly underachieved based on the talent they had. Yes 2 UCL’s but only 1 scudetto
They should have had the RMadrid run of the 2010s , 5 UCLs

          1. Agree there completely, I’ve supported Milan since 1988 and Carlos’s Milan was the most frustrating I ever watched. Part down to his naivety as a coach then, but I think Silvio was mainly to blame, choosing formations and players. Teams were adopting 433 and 4231 but he insisted in two strikers and the no10..it hindered us.
