Good news has arrived from Milanello for Paulo Fonseca ahead of the big game on Saturday evening at San Siro against Juventus.

According to the latest update from MilanNews, Matteo Gabbia returned to full training with the rest of the squad today after the calf injury. It was an issue that forced him to miss the last few matches, one that he sustained during the win over Club Brugge.

He took a risk in that game having felt some previous discomfort and his period of absence is perhaps a warning to others not to do so. Now, though, he has fully mended and will have Juventus in his sights on Saturday.

This is another important recovery, which in fact allows Fonseca to have practically almost the entire squad at his disposal, with the exception of the long-term absentees Ismael Bennacer and Alessandro Florenzi.

It is big for the defensive department too, one which has allowed 20 goals in the first 15 games of the season across all competitions. The eye test suggests that Gabbia has been the most consistent performer at centre-back in 2022, and the numbers show it as well.

Whether the Italian gets the nod to start in three days is something Fonseca will have to decide, but it seems to be between him, Fikayo Tomori and Malick Thiaw, given Strahinja Pavlovic’s recent rough run of form.
