Libero: Milan could land Atalanta star Hojlund through intriguing straight swap deal

By Oliver Fisher -

An interesting hypothesis has emerged whereby AC Milan could get their hands on striker Rasmus Hojlund of Atalanta, according to a report.

Today’s edition of the newspaper Libero (via SempreMilan.it) reports that Milan could sell De Ketelaere after just one season and that Lombardy rivals Atalanta are on the trail of the Belgian playmaker.

In order to help facilitate an agreement, there is a willingness on the part of La Dea to negotiate a swap deal which involves Hojlund, an impressive striker that is being closely followed by Rossoneri scouts.

The valuation by the two clubs of their respective players is almost identical and therefore the idea of an equal exchange could sensationally gain ground, writes the newspaper.

Hojlund would represent the young profile that Milan need in order to freshen up the centre-forward role, and then they could decide to pay Real Madrid the €25m required to buy Brahim Diaz and thus resolve the doubt about who will play in the attack after De Ketelaere’s exit.

    1. Because they scout world wide and are not afraid to invest and give chance to prospects. While Milan only scouts cheap french league players.

        1. That has nothing to do with Atalanta scouting. But more with the fact that they prefer to sell their best players for profit.

          1. “Prefer to sell their best players for profit”? That’s a bizarre statement. Prefer? You either have to or you don’t. Hence the argument that can be made that their scouts are better precisely because they need to sell, whereas clubs like Milan are the ones buying and thus don’t allocate resources to scouting. Or Milan used to be that type of club in any case. Either way, Atalanta has bought PLENTY of players that haven’t panned out. You just haven’t heard of them because….they didn’t pan out. Meanwhile, we bought Theo for 20m and he’s now worth at least 80m. Kalulu for 500k and he’s now worth at least 30m. Thiaw for 7m and he’s now worth at least 20m and that number is set to climb. Maignan was bought for 15m and he ought to be worth more than Dollarumma. I think our scouting is just fine. On the other hand, what isn’t fine is our lack of faith in our primavera….

  1. Go for it. If feasible Milan should serious consider such a deal. I do think Atalanta will want some cash cause CDK’ s valuation has dropped this season.

  2. as much as i would like us to keep de ketelaere and give him another year to prove himself its pretty much a no brainer if atalanta would agree upon such a deal.
Now back to reality, why would they even consider such a deal when they can sell rasmus højlund for 50mi l+ and propably could use a cash influx if they doesnt qualify for cl ? i see no point for them to agree upon such deal.

    1. perhaps loan with an option to buy is best for all parties.
Send cdk to Atalanta with 35m option to buy.
Take Hojlund with a 50m option to buy.

      1. They can most likely sell him for more so still see no point in it for them.
If it it actually did happen though im confident that the player would blossom with them as the pressure at that club is far lesser than with us.

        1. I read that Atlanta set a 60-70mil asking price amid Arsenal and Man U intrest for Hojlund. So this swap doesn’t make sense for Atalanta if they can get much more from the Premier League.

  3. Atalanta are not that stupid swap their prized gem with flop player . The best we can do offer them one our academy except camarda + cash 40m euro for rasmus. This deal can only unlock if we get fund by selling CDK to EPL club 25-28m euro

  4. Give CDK a real chance to prove himself next year incl. having a full pre-season training with ACM this summer. The lad has got qualities.
Quite often players require time to adjust to new team and playstyle; Kessie, Leao, Tonali, just to name a few.
ps; Hojlund is great in open/ counterattack play, yet not sure how efficient he is against closed defences which is the majority of what ACM faces especially in serieA.

    1. No man. CDK has some quality but he has no grit, no effort, no grinta, no true flashes of the player that might be there. Leao, Tonali, Kessie, etc all has glimpses, all had shown something to latch onto. CDK hasn’t shown a thing which is very very unfortunate. He might become great but that won’t be here. Best for both parties to move on even only after 1 year.

      1. Bingo. Playing for Atlanta and playing for Milan is not the same level of pressure.

Being star player at brugge doesn’t mean starter at Milan.

      2. Agree. Kessie and leao showed glimpses and were still helping the team to earn points. Go watch kessie first season highlights.

  5. Hojland is being valued at 60-70m by Atalanta? The football market has truly gone mad. Even the now popular name of Balogun is only 35m, and he has almost 3x as many goals this season.

  6. Why would they want a player that almost contributes nothing? If it’s a swap + certain fees, that’d make much more sense.

  7. Hojland is a great player but milan really has to give cdk time or let him play on the position he proved himself on! On the wings! If they manage to do this deal milan should have a clause in it that they can buy cdk back for 20m. Because is he will go to Atalanta an he will start to shine. Atalanta will slap a asking price for around 60m on him

    1. What makes you think he’d be good on the wings. I don’t care what he did in Belgium he was good everywhere when he was there… AM, wing, striker, etc. He’s not fast, has poor acceleration and I doubt he can beat his man 1 on 1 consistently so how does that translate to a good winger… CDK is 100% an AM or a CM who can attack, that’s where his skillet is. He might be good in the future but he doesn’t fit here. If he magically turns it around great but I have strong strong doubts.

      1. He’s skillset will be most efficient in the AM and Second Striker, False 9 or CF.

He seems to have a very good first touch at receiving the ball, if he were in the box, just shoot. But in the CM position, after receiving the ball, he can’t dribble, he can’t run, he’s nor physical, and needs more composure to pick a right pass. Such kind of players strike me as a box player, he may be a good finisher.

  8. 100% it is good idea with High IQ Operation
And Execellent Savior of Failiure signing of CDK.
It is even better to add some cash to Covers of Atlanta who has Tree Suited And Chained Managers,Scouts, and Directors who always Produces High Level Profits from Players Generated by them

  9. Why atalanta scouts are more good shape than others italian clubs ? Coz they are not afraid to playing that young talents on his squad. Look at milan young players only play for primavera and then sold to other italian club while they invest rare cheap young france talent.

Straight swap hojlund and CdK while milan buy 20m for brahim its good idea. But only in your dreams bro.. hehe

  10. Exchange CDK for Gift Orban or Victor Boniface.
That would be more of an equal exchange and equal valuation than exchanging CDK for Hojlund

  11. So many idiots Milan fans saying trash here. So you all think Milan will sell CDK after just a season because he hasn’t pick yet??, Then in you all wild dream. If the management does not believe in him then they wouldn’t have gone for him. The boy will come out good, he just needs more time to adapt period.

    1. Not all examples of a player not working out in year 1 are the same. There are fundamental differences which apply to CDK.

      1. He is not playing in the position he was playing when he made a name for himself. He is barely an AM. I am not sure why that means we can’t try him as a forward but, to date, that hasn’t happened. That’s despite Milan being in desperate need of a forward. So you’re relying on quality in a different position as being a guarantee of his ability as an AM. That is a dangerous, illogical assumption to make.

      2. The 35m investment is much higher than other examples. You don’t assume quality just because of the money that was spent. The EPL has created a false economy and inflated prices which is not in keeping with the qualities of players. And this may well be year 1 of the results bubble rupturing.

CDK was a 15m player we overpaid for because we were in a bidding war with an EPL club. We only signed CDK because we didn’t get the chance to break the bank on Botman, where we lost out to another EPL club, which resulted in a much better outcome of signing Thiaw for what he was actually worth (leaving us with the money which we wasted on CDK).

I use Daniel Maldini as my guide when it comes to CDK’s actual valuation because they share so many characteristics. At the only point at which they can be truly compared, as players in the same league, Maldini has the handicap of being in an inferior team and still outperforms CDK with even more upside (he’s quicker and better with the ball at his feet). He also struggled for continuity and game time (joining Spezia late in the mercato and then not getting much of a run until Semplici took over in February 2023).

You can’t continue to look at CDK as the player who scored goals in Belgium. That league sucks relative to the Serie A, which in terms of the defensive capacity of its teams and the difficulty of scoring goals is still elite, and there is an updated and more relevant form line. That doesn’t mean CDK will not improve, he definitely will, but that is not the question. It is the extent of the improvement that is in issue, whether it is consistent with the money Milan has invested based both on his quality and Milan’s financial position, and when that improvement will occur.

      3. Having spent 35m we can’t afford to chase the loss. We still need an AM (Diaz is working recently on the right not as an AM), unless you take the leap of faith and pencil CDK in for next season. Why are you doing that, because we spent a lot of money or because of something you have seen?

You don’t double down on a bad investment just because you spent a lot. That’s when you look silly (which we currently do) and lose all your money. He should still have enough worth to the previously interested Leeds to recover 75% of his value. That seems contradictory but it’s not. If they value him they will still spend significant money (and maybe they play him as a false 9). They have the money to spend. As I see it, the sensible thing is to write off the loss and move forward.

I would also not discount the possibility that some of these decisions will be influenced by ownership. The Yanks runs sports clubs like businesses more than anyone. Part of me thinks this is why Pioli is throwing everything into the UCL, because he has been told to. The owners will not take kindly to a wasted asset that continues to depreciate in value.

In any event, how good would CDK have be next season for Milan to realise a capital gain? Look at Sandro, still inconsistent and struggling big time in year 3 at Milan (he is only just emerging from the malaise). When does it all click for CDK? What do we do with the AM spot in the meantime?

The Milan of old could have signed a replacement and taken on the risk with CDK. We can’t afford to do that these days.
