MN: Milan preparing for an honest discussion with Ibrahimovic – the current thoughts

By Oliver Fisher -

AC Milan have a conversation planned with Zlatan Ibrahimovic during which his future beyond the end of the season will be discussed, a report claims.

Yesterday Milan resumed training at Milanello in view of Saturday’s match against Salernitana, but MilanNews reports that Ibrahimovic will be missing for the fourth consecutive match as he is still struggling with the inflammation of his right Achilles tendon which will not go away.

Stefano Pioli is once again left with no choice but to start Olivier Giroud up front and Ante Rebic will be the alternative, because January signing Marko Lazetic is not quite at his best condition yet.

As the injury problems persist, there will come a time where there must be an honest discussion about what Ibrahimovic’s future holds, especially given his contract will expire on 30 June 2022 and he will turn 41 later this year.

Milan’s idea could be to renew his contract, as Maldini admitted before the derby: “Ibra knows and does not pretend about his situation and what could be the agreement with Milan. If he’s not able to go on, he’ll say ‘I’ll stop’. At the moment he wants to continue. Zlatan will never be a burden for this team, but always an asset. We have a wonderful relationship.”

After that, the question becomes this: will Ibrahimovic renew with Milan and in the process be accepting of a supporting role, or will he want to leave while he is still considered a leading figure?
