GdS: Milan and Inter to meet in a two-legged affair again – Milanese football bounces back

By Oliver Fisher -

AC Milan will go head to head with their city rivals Inter for both the Scudetto and the Coppa Italia, something that has not happened before.

According to La Gazzetta dello Sport, Inter and Milan have met 30 times in the cup with 13 wins for the Rossoneri, 8 for the Nerazzurri and 9 draws. However, the pair have never been in a position where they are both competing for the same two trophies, so the Coppa Italia semi-final – which will take place over two legs – has some added spice.

Next year we will celebrate the 60th anniversary of the start of the Golden Triennium when from 1963 to 1965, the Champions League was only won by Milan clubs. First came triumph for Milan at Wembley over Benfica, then that of Inter in Vienna against Real Madrid and at San Siro again against Benfica.

With the Milanese clubs competing at the top of the table and in the Coppa Italia, it is clear that after years of struggles both teams are on the right path. Inter have been at the top for a while, Milan were more delayed but are now back in the running.

There is a precedent regarding two-legged games too, as they competed in the 2002-03 Champions League semi-finals when Milan won before going on to beat Juventus in the final. In first and second legs back in May 2003 there were only 6 days between, but this time there will be 49 days.
