GdS: Pioli turns to unprecedented midfield pairing – Bakayoko has a point to prove

By Oliver Fisher -

AC Milan head coach Stefano Pioli will have to turn to an unprecedented midfield pairing this evening against Spezia, hoping to make virtue out of necessity.

There is a defensive emergency for Pioli to battle as Alessio Romagnoli, Simon Kjaer and Fikayo Tomori will all miss today’s game, but there is also one in midfield as Franck Kessie and Ismael Bennacer are involved in the African Cup of Nations, while Sandro Tonali will serve a one-match suspension.

La Gazzetta dello Sport (via MilanNews) writes how Krunic and Bennacer will play together in the midfield for the first time from the first minute, as the emergency leaves no choice for Pioli who will have to field the two of them since he has no alternatives. The role is certainly not the Bosnian’s favourite as he prefers to play higher up, while we have seen the best from the Frenchman as more of a box-to-box presence.

Bakayoko has appeared to be on the rise in the last few matches it must be said, especially from a physical point of view, and he must now prove he has definitively changed pace and reassure Milan that they did the right thing to re-sign him in the summer.
