MN: Milan must soon devise Brahim Diaz strategy – the many factors at play

By Oliver Fisher -

One of the decisions that the AC Milan management will have to make before the summer window is what they would like to do regarding Brahim Diaz.

MilanNews writes how Brahim Diaz is in his third year at Milan on loan from Real Madrid, a rather peculiar situation in itself given the tenure of his loan spell. The first year was a season-long dry loan costing Milan €200k, and then the agreement with Real Madrid was renewed on a two-year basis for a €3m loan fee.

There was no official option to buy inserted into the current deal however there is gentlemen’s agreement at around €20m, a figure that at the moment Paolo Maldini and Ricky Massara do seem not inclined to spend, even if from what filters out there is the intention to keep him perhaps with a discount.

It has been a fluctuating time at Milan for the Spaniard given that at first he was Hakan Calhanoglu’s deputy, having a positive season overall, and then last season he was expected to be the starter but instead Franck Kessiè and Rade Krunic ended up getting the nod in the advanced midfielder role, perhaps showing a slight lack of trust from Pioli.

Should Milan keep him? Well, by now they know that his dribbling ability, his close control, his attitude on the pitch and his professionalism are big pluses, as well as of course the knowledge of Pioli’s demands and tactics.

On the other hand, Brahim has shown so far that he is inconsistent and despite being here so long it still does not feel that he is a permanent starter. Plus, there is the De Ketelaere situation to balance as making another sizeable investment in an attacking midfield player would raise questions.

There is still a long way to go before the end of the season and any assessment can only be made in the moment, but should Diaz keep going the way he is then it is likely that Maldini and Massara will try to keep him. The will of the player will be decisive, which could push Real Madrid to lower their requests.

  1. A good question. Why you should worry if real do or don’t do the buy back clause and get a little money more than u spend? So for me let him leave and put faith more to Yacine Adli

    1. I agree. Diaz has shown nothing special. At a minimum let CDK get the starting job there next season and give him a real chance with consistent minutes, with Adli taking the “backup” role. If the club still feel inclined to bring in someone else then let’s get that Greek guy from PAOK for 10-15m. Brahim has been here for 3 seasons and IMHO hasn’t shown anything to indicate he’s going to become the next Kaka or Boban. Let’s move on and forward.

  2. Not a wise move to sign him up permanently. He doesn’t have what it takes. With thanks, let him return to RM. Give Adil and CDK more chances

  3. I’ve not seen any fan here, other forum’s or social media who thinks we should keep Diaz.

Hopefully, management do NOT keep him.

  4. He’s $20M so he’s not staying, simple as that. He works hard and has some skill but he’s too tiny and gets pushed off the ball. He doesn’t have the speed or dribbling of Messi to make up for his size. Every couple of months he scores a great goal but that’s not nearly enough. We desperately need a real playmaker and also a better manager. We have no real attacking strategy, just hope that Leao or Theo makes a run.
