Tuttosport: Milan need another jolt against Napoli – the spooky comparison with 2022

By Oliver Fisher -

AC Milan and Napoli are preparing to face each other three times in a three weeks and each promises to be a fascinating clash tactically.

Tuttosport (via PianetaMilan) reports that thirteen months ago the Rossoneri – fresh from two disappointing draws with Salernitana and Udinese – prevailed 1-0 at the Stadio Diego Armando Maradona thanks to a goal from Olivier Giroud.

On Sunday, Milan will play in Naples after facing Salernitana and Udinese and will then host Empoli, exactly as happened last season last. However, this time they approach the game in worse form compared to February 2022 as Milan obtained two points against Salernitana and Udinese, but in March 2023 only one arrived.

Then there’s the main difference: on 6 March 2022 Napoli vs. Milan was a battle for top spot because the Azzurri and Rossoneri were tied at the top of the table with 57 points (Inter third on 55), but today there is a 23-point gap.

Sunday’s match is of course a precursor to the Champions League clash but there is participation in next season’s competition on the line for Stefano Pioli’s men too. A move by Pioli is needed which can shock and shake his side, especially in view of the two-legged affair to come.
