CorSera: Milan’s €4.5m offer no longer enough – Mendes’ new demands for Leao

By Oliver Fisher -

AC Milan will have to raise the offer they have put on the table if they are to convince Rafael Leao to extend his stay at the club, a report claims.

Leao is having his best season yet for Milan since joining from Lille with 11 goals and 6 assists in total this season, which has aroused the interest of several top European clubs. However, the Rossoneri management obviously consider the Portuguese winger to be a cornerstone of their project and they want to extend his deal which is currently set to expire in June 2024.

According to Corriere della Sera (via SempreMilan.it), the requests of his agent Jorge Mendes have risen and the €4.5m net per season on the table – which did not get the approval of the player and his entourage – will not be enough.

Mendes is asking for a sum comparable to that currently received by Zlatan Ibrahimovic which is around €6m net per season. The two parties are obviously focused on the decisive match against Sassuolo but once the season is over negotiations will quickly move.

      1. Kid is 22, he will only get better. You can pay him now and watch him grow into a Milan legend, or sell him and watch him rip us apart in UCL year after year. If we manage to qualify that is, because we were too cheap to pay 6M to a kid that carried us most of the season.

You need to take your head out of your behind, good players cost money, if you don’t pay them they leave. It happened to us twice already and it’s gonna happen twice more in a week or two.

        1. He won’t become a Milan legend as he wants bigger money elsewhere. We’ve seen these players before. Anyone remember the good old Cashie?

  1. He’s emerging as one of the hottest talents on the continent. £6m is not unreasonable. Get him signed up asap, or risk losing another jewel on a free!

  2. Compare to 9M asked by Dollaruma this 6M is well deserves for Leao so hopefully Elliot not being stingy with this one.

  3. 4.5 is enough for now.
None of this nonsense “Pay him whatever he wants” . He needs to show consistency first, continue to progress and develop and we can always renegotiate for more money.
Also he needs to perform vs the big teams too not just against the bottom of the table. Give me 1 good game vs the top 5 he has played in the last 3 years. VS Inter last year in 2-1 but in that game inter played with Dambrozio and Kolarov as CBs.
Big money players show up in big games. And he hasn’t done that.

    1. Yep. And it won’t stop at 5 or 6M€. Next summer he’d want 7M€ and then 8M€. We’ve seen these types of agents and players before. It’s ALL about the money. Nothing else.

  4. Just win us the Scudetto for us Leao and be on your way because we all know Elliot isn’t ponying up that kind of money for you. Hope this time we’ll get a transfer fee.
Was also fun reading all those “Leao contract renewal imminent” and “Why Leao’s situation is different to Kessie, signature arriving soon” articles throughout the entire season.

  5. Everybody be like “pay, pay”. Let’s find some perspective kiddiewinks: The club has a wage budget (now being admired by a host of clubs), and FFP amendments will soon pass mandating a max spend of 70% or revenues. SO if you want to “pay, pay, PAY” Leao, you will have to surround him with a team of scrubs and kids, because we won’t be able to afford anything else. We need reinforcement at ST, AMC, and RW (and probably CB and LB, and backup for RB). Where will this come from??? I have a feeling that Leao might be sacrificed this summer to fund everything else. Hence the Origi signing, who is originally a LW. I bet Leao will fetch 60m. Thus we’ll have 120m to spend (Leao sale plus 60m from funds already set aside for the transfer window). Striker ~40-50m, RW ~30-40m, Sanches ~20m, Botman ~30m. There is your summer market. Thanks for playing Economics 101. PAY PAY PAY.

    1. P.S. I’d like to add that my reasoning is based on Milan’s and football’s economic situation, and is not a judgment on Leao and whether he “deserves” X salary, which is determined by the market anyway. I’m also revising his valuation up to 80m, but again because of market conditions not sure anyone outside PSG will pay it, and even PSG is shedding salary, but they do need a replacement for Mbappe. So the extra 20m from the Leao sale can either be put in the bank or used to get a couple of interesting 18-19 year olds to keep the development conveyor belt going a la Atalanta.

      1. Wise words, wise words. No player is bigger than the club. He isn’t 6M€ player YET. I doubt he never will be either but I dare him to prove me wrong.

    2. I think 60 million euros is too cheap, if we win the Scudetto maybe 80-90 million makes more sense. but I would prefer it if Leao stayed

  6. Either seal the deal by first week of summer transfer market, or sell him.

Personally I think Leao deserves 6m+bonuses. Actually for a 100m player, he deserves more but if 6M makes him happy, just pay the man, NOW. Mendez sure knows his business.

To Milian’s management, If you are not willing to meet his demands, don’t waste time. Cash in while there’s still time, and get someone new instead of turning this whole thing into a mess that nets the club a 150Mil loss.

I just hope Maldini doesn’t repeat the same mistake for the fourth time. 3 is enough.

  7. We are losing Kessie and Romagnoli, already lost Calhanoglu and Donnarumma. It’s a mixture of luck and great work by Maldini & co that it has worked out. Problem is that it’s unlikely to continue. A winning team needs to keep its core intact. Losing Leao is like losing our whole attack. Giroud/Ibra don’t do enough on the pitch and are old, Rebic is not a real striker and is not consistent. Right wing has been a problem since Suso. We can’t sell Leao and play an entirely new attacking trio. Keeping Leao would make sure the attack still works, while allowing new ST-RW to settle. Selling him means we are again in rebuilding mode. Best player in Serie A, and he works in our system. Give him what he wants, worse players earn more, and everybody already knows we don’t tolerate players asking for more than what they deserve. I would also like Kessie to stay but yeah, we have Tonali and Bennacer who already work amazing in the team so it doesn’t really break the team when he leaves.

  8. 6M is quite reasonable for his age and contribution. He’s young and still growing for the future. Losing Leao will surely drop Milan’s attack significantly since we don’t have any good AMC, RW and LW subs for now. We would probably not remain on the top of table and won against Verona, Fiorentina and Atalanta if Leao was not playing.

    1. 6M€ quite reasonable for his age?!!! What a load of BS. He’s not old enough for that kind of money. LOL. And he definitely ain’t complete enough for it either. A couple of good matches won’t mean he’s Messi.

      1. Never said he’s messi or even better than messi, but he’s been decisive in our crucial final games. If Milan can win scudetto after a decade, Leao deserves much credits for that. He’s young and 6M is reasonable for long-term investment rather than selling him to buy new players in his position. It’s Europe, where EPL, LaLiga clubs and PSG can sign best players and Milan won’t compete if we keep letting go our best players.

  9. It’s simple you pay him. Period. If we aspire to win CL and compete with the world’s best this wage limit of 4.5M will not hold up at all. You have to reward youth players who develop and be some the stars you envisioned them to be. That means paying their market value. If we sell every time they achieve that status we will remain nothing but a feeder club to the “big” clubs like Man City, Man U, Liverpool, Real Madrid, etc…Everyone wants to get paid their market value at some point. This is only the beginning, more players will ask for the same as they continue to develop. Tomori, Tonali, Kalulu, etc…we got lucky Theo didn’t ask for more. We will see what kind of club Elliott or Redbird want us to become. One of the worlds best or a feeder club. Time will tell very soon….
