Stars burning out: Milan setting dangerous trend ahead of crucial summer

There are several questions arising about the immediate future of several AC Milan stars and the mercato may no longer be as simple as it once seemed.

Leading up to the summer mercato, it seemed that Milan knew where they needed to invest to strengthen. That, unfortunately, is the keyword. In recent seasons, fans have become all too familiar with the word sacrifice and it appears that this will be the case again, even if not directly.

Mike Maignan’s deal was renewed until 2030, so there is some stability there. However, when you look past him, the stars seem further away from Milano than they have ever been.

Modric’s future

Starting in midfield, Luka Modric’s future is the most uncertain. In fairness, it would be difficult to put him into the same bracket. When he signed his deal, he was not a long-term star. At 40-years-old, it was very much going to be a case of enjoying him whilst you can.

His potential renewal reflects that, too. An option of another year was inserted from the start, but it would be a gamble whether he wanted to keep playing after seeing out his first year at San Siro. The Rossoneri were in love instantly and whilst similar has been suggested about the Croatian, we know little about where his future lies.

A decision should be made in the next month or two, so there is time to make arrangements. However, it is the first potential star that is hanging in the balance. Again, though, his situation was always going to be a gamble.

Attacking talents

Then you have the attacking stars. In recent years, the frontline of the Diavolo have been underwhelming, barring two names. It is an area that lacks significant quality when two players are unfit or out of form. Of course, we are speaking about Rafael Leao and Christian Pulisic here.

The duo are further away than they have ever been and the signs don’t look good. Leao is reportedly open to discussing an exit and Milan are the most open they have ever been. On the other hand, you have Pulisic, whose renewal has been on ice for almost a year now, despite it seeming like progress was going to be made in recent months.

It opens a very dangerous precedent. Whilst the team without them is ok, it is severely lacking. Every top European club has an MVP on the pitch, in the mercato and commercially. It appears that the Rossoneri are about to lose theirs. That is a significant issue.
