MN: Calabria’s first birthday as captain – he has grown from boy to man with Milan

By Oliver Fisher -

Davide Calabria is celebrating turning 26 years old today in what is his first birthday since he was officially appointed as AC Milan’s captain.

MilanNews recall the journey that Calabria has been on to wear the armband of the team he supported growing up and whose colours he has represented since the age of 11. It has not been a straight upward path, but all the sacrifices that the full-back has made must seem worth it.

Calabria came to the club 15 years ago as mentioned and since coming to the Vismara that day and formally joining the youth sector, the Milan shirt has become a second skin to him.

He arrived on the threshold of the first team in 2015, and he made his senior debut in the last round of the 2014-15 campaign in an away win against Atalanta. In many ways the rise of Calabria has mirrored the club from the difficult ‘Banter Era’ of seven years ago to last season’s Scudetto win.

The captain’s absence has been felt this season since his injury after nine appearances, especially in the first games of absence, since Alessandro Florenzi was also out and Sergino Dest was not yet fully integrated into the group.

Now the American seems more settled but make no mistake, when Calabria is back at 100% he will regain his starting spot on the right side of the defence and will be essential for Stefano Pioli in the second part of the season.
