MN: Gabbia decisive at both ends in Dinamo win – he hopes to give Pioli a dilemma

By Oliver Fisher -

There was an emotional moment just before half time in AC Milan’s win over Dinamo Zagreb last night as Matteo Gabbia finally got his first senior goal.

MilanNews recalls how Gabbia’s header from Sandro Tonali’s free-kick was the first of four goals that brought home three fundamental points and that also means Stefano Pioli’s side will need just a draw against Red Bull Salzburg to secure qualification for the Champions League round of 16.

It was not only the joy of a first goal of the season for Gabbia and breaking the deadlock in a big game, but also because it was his goal ever with the Milan shirt. Having come through the Rossoneri’s youth academy passing from age group to age group, this success is a source of pride.

The fact that he also won man of the match in the fan vote is also a testament to the defensive performance that the young Italian put in at the other end too, with Gabbia having found consistency in his performance after the encouraging display against Chelsea.

Gabbia is the perfect example of those who can achieve their goals with determination and work as he has not always being near the top of the hierarchy but has always persevered and now he hopes to give Pioli some selection dilemmas.

  1. Guys let’s be serious. There is no Gabbia for Milan. Instead of going forwards, are we going to go backwards????

    1. Why not?… Because you already formed your opinions inappropriately about a young player who is already performing well and has a ton of time left to grow yet still yet you won’t give any praise regardless of how well he performs. Sad really. Even worse that you are biased against a homegrown player. Very weird.

      1. @Zoro Caloro
Well let’s see his journey at Milan.
But everyone is talking about the game against Dynamo…Did you see him against Chelsea?? Or more importantly the game against Verona?? Of course I’m not referring to the own goal, that could happen to anyone, but his general positioning on the pitch…he was always two clicks behind Verona players.
A homegrown player doesn’t mean he gets a green light…You’ve got to earn it. We are talking about Milan. I don’t know your age but I grew up with Baresi, Maldini, desailly, Nesta, Costacurta….Stakes are high in Milan, especially as a centre back.
Did you see Thiaw performance??? There you see prospect.

        1. Gabbia can’t do a lot against Chelsea when Tomori got red card at 18th minute.

Maldini, Nesta, etc are worldclass CB but their team are way different than current Milan. That’s not an apple to apple comparison with Gabbia.

Thiaw have prospect but compare to Gabbia he still needs to improve a lot. Two blocks doesn’t mean Thiaw is better than Gabbia.

Also, did you even watch last season when Gabbia pair with Kalulu against Roma and Milan still won 3-1?

You need to admit that Gabbia is a solid young CB despite his limited playing time.

  2. GABIJA JE I LANI bio jedanako dobar kad je mjenjao igrače obrane !! Bit če veliko pojačanje ali mu treba dat i prostora za češće igranje i dokazivanje !!

  3. Yeah, it’s ridiculous. Gabbia is no less capable than when we got Romagnoli for 30m when he was 20. Gabbia is a little older, but for a defender that is less consequential. He just needs to keep on getting minutes. He may very well evolve into the perfect partner for Tomori. Thiaw has been interesting in his limited appearances too. TBH, I don’t think we need to spend any money on CB next summer. Focus on RW and ST and maybe a proper backup for Theo.

    1. Yep this exactly. Also we should see how vranckx does and if we can renew bennacer, if no bennacer renewal and vranckx seems just average then may need a CM/DM as well.

      1. Speaking of DM I hear Barcelona want to move Kessie on this January. I don’t know how true it is but I’m sure there’re fans who’ve still got some love left for him even if it’s just a modicum of it.

  4. I don’t want to hear any more talk about Maldini looking to sign a CB in the next windows – freaking ridiculous when we have 5 already.
