Mike Maignan had his own personal battle during AC Milan’s 3-1 defeat against Liverpool at San Siro tonight, fighting through discomfort before suffering a collision that forced him off.

Maignan had been grabbing his thigh muscle at various points during the first half after going down off the ball, and yet he managed to keep going into the second half.

At the start of the second 45 minutes, MilanNews recall that the Frenchman was forced to leave the pitch following a nasty clash with Fikayo Tomori. The goalkeeper got the worst of it, taking the brunt of a sliding challenge to the knee while Tomori and Diogo Jota converged on the ball.

At the end of the match, Maignan left the stadium limping and at this point he is ‘doubtful for the derby’ on Sunday. It was good experience for Lorenzo Torriani, who came off the bench to make his competitive debut with the senior side.

It is another big blow for Milan in addition to what was a bad result and an even worse performance. Maignan has suffered with injury issues a fair bit since joining and this would just be the latest, but in this case it really was an unfortunate collision.

  1. Watching football my whole life and never seen a goalkeeper spending so much time sitting on the pitch as Maignan. Out of nowhere during games, the camera switches to him and he is siting on the ground asking for medical help. 3 minutes into the game he was sitting on the pitch.
    Every year the same thing.
I don’t care how good people think he is, extending him and giving him a high salary will be a mistake. He isn’t someone who you can count to stay healthy. You will be stuck in a same situation as with Bennacer. He can’t stay healthy and teams don’t want to take him because he has a salary too high for them.
Best ability is reliability and he isn’t reliable.

    1. I think we can afford to sell him when a good offer comes in. We’ve got some good young goal keepers coming through. Sportiello has been unavailable at most points when he has been needed so far though.
I’m still puzzled how he managed to get a long term injury at the team hotel…

  2. Exactly this. GW1 of every champions league campaign. Liverpool twice and Newcastle. I’m honestly fearful everytime he has to kick past the halfway line because I expect to see him on the ground soon after. 6m for half a campaign. 😬😬😬

  3. I agree with Z. Maignan is a very good keeper, but is also a V-E-R-Y UNlucky player. As I stated before, he definitely born under a bad sign, it’s fvckin bizarre.

  4. And then this guy wants €8 million …. every year he gets injured and sits out the most important matches.
Get rid of him as soon as possible because in a few months’ time no other team would want him.

  5. Regardless of his injuries, he’s only an average shot stopper. Look at both goals today for example. I don’t know how many more unnecessary shots go in before people start realizing this – MAIGNEN IS OUR NUMBER ONE DEFENSIVE PROBLEM.

Of course, there are others, many others, but he is the first mistake we should fix.

Now if we also consider he’s fitness levels, than the solution should be pretty clear. Except it’s not
