MN: Milan admit defeat as Maldini makes clear promise regarding time lost

By Isak Möller -

The delay for the renewals of Paolo Maldini and Ricky Massara was far from ideal. In fact, Milan have already admitted defeat on that front, but the directors are now eager to get back to business and make up for lost time.

Maldini announced the renewal from his car as he was exiting Casa Milan late last night, clearly relieved that the parties got it over the line. However, he made it clear that they need to make up for the time lost: “We started a bit late but we will make up for the lost time”.

As highlighted by MilanNews, it’s clear that the delay was a failure by Milan, an own-goal that everyone could see so clear. The Scudetto celebrations were (unfortunately) quickly swapped for anxiety and it was rather unnecessary, one could argue.

But the reaction is always the most important part, and Maldini showed straight away that work needs to be done (and fast). There is no more time to waste as the Rossoneri want to be even stronger next season, aiming for the 20th Scudetto and the second star.

  1. Where is that dude that keeps telling me Milan didn’t miss anything before 1st of July? Every time I’ve commented you were there to reply, I’m expecting it again.

    1. “We started a bit late” hardly sound like he feels they should have had deals done already. Window opens today so let’s see what they can do. Also they are not bag ladies shopping the bargain bins. You don’t rush around in fear of missing your size on the clearance rack. I expect them to make good, targeted signings that don’t require them to overpay for fees or salaries—-just like they’ve done the last two windows. We’ll see at the end if all your doomsaying was justified or if I was correct.

    2. Lol. Was it me? If it wasn’t let me indulge you anyway:

“Cro, it’s too late. 2022-23 is over. Finished. As a matter of fact, why bother? Let’s sell all the players and close the club, because we didn’t sign Mbappe and Haaland before July 1, so complete fail. #ElliottOut, #BrokeBirdOut, #AnyFutureMilanOwnerOut.”

      Feel better?

  2. That’s not what “admitting defeat” means.

Anyway, enough of these stories, time to see what develops now we know who’s doing the work.

  3. Agree, no admission of defeat… in an “ideal world”, sure we would’ve wanted M&M renewed immediately; but we don’t live in an ideal world. We must be realistic and this is what I expected all along and the mercato is still young.

What did we lose here? We lost out on Botman — but did we REALLY need him (given the development of Kalulu and the return of Kjaer and how awesome Tomori is)? And we thought we lost Renato Sanches; but PSG has denied making an offer to him… but honestly, I’m not sure we really NEED him either.

M&M have time to figure out who we need and at what prices and they have lots of backups/alternatives in mind in case we get outbid on our first choices. I’m not worried.

    FORZA MILAN!
